05/03/11: Frankie Has No Shortage Of Hugs And Kisses

Frankie is doing awesome in his foster home. As you can see in the new photos, he has adjusted well and is getting along great with his new foster siblings as well as all the people in the home.

Below is another update from our Volunteer who spent a lot of time with Frankie (and fell in love with him) and went to visit Frankie at his foster home.

"I really miss Frankie but after my visit I feel so much better! I really couldn't get over how great he looked when I walked in - he was in the middle of hugging his new mom and he's already gained most of his needed weight. Not to mention, his coat was glistening. He was super happy when he saw me, but he still made the rounds to everyone else when giving out hugs and kisses.

He did watch me leave as I got into my car, but I looked back when I pulled out into the road and he was already back to focusing on his family. The last time I walked Frankie with his foster family he kept turning around to jump up on me, and this time he didn't do that at all - in fact he was walking with his foster dad ahead of me at one point, and instead of turning back to check on me, he turned back to make sure Misty (the other dog) was still with him.

Frankie is so happy, and I couldn't be more relieved!! :)."

04/19/11: Frankie Is A Lover

Frankie has been neutered and is finally in a foster home. He is a great boy and is adjusting beautifully. There have been no issues at all. Below is a report from one of our volunteers who went to check on his progress with his foster family.

"I did the follow-up home visit with Frankie's foster home this afternoon and I couldn't believe how great he looks and how happy he is. His coat looks amazing (he had some dandruff before and a little bald spot beginning on the top of his head), and it is incredibly shiny now, no flakes, and his little bald spot is growing back. The food they're giving him is definitely working for him (no more diarrhea either). Apparently he loves it so much that he opened the bag when nobody was looking and had a snack during the week....much like he did with the veggie sticks at my house lol.

He is so happy with them, it's obvious how much he loves all of them. When we went on a walk with the two dogs, Frankie's head was so high, and his tail was way up, he is SO confident now I could hardly believe it was him. I couldn't have been more pleased seeing how much they love him, and how at home he definitely feels already. I attached some pictures for you too!"

02/11/11: One Person DOES Make a Difference

Frankie is literally one in a million….dogs who are overlooked in crowded shelters every day. He is a young 1 1/2 year old dog who was dropped off at a city shelter by his family because they had no time for him. They described him as a good boy, good with kids and dogs, who is shy around some people. His given name was Conan but we decided he needed a new name that suited him better and would reflect a new start in life.

Frankie's fate was death until his angel, Katie, made it her mission to save his life. She saw his story and photo posted on an internet site that gives a list of dogs in shelters who are marked as "urgent". She looked everywhere for assistance. No one responded to her pleas but Katie refused to give up. She knew Frankie deserved to live.

When we received Katie’s call and heard Frankie’s story we felt compelled to help. We did not have an available foster home and we did not have the funds needed for him to be boarded. Katie, determined, offered to pay his kennel fees and to try and raise money to cover the boarding cost herself. We could not say “No”.

NBR made the necessary arrangements to have Frankie boarded with a positive reinforcement trainer who could evaluate his level of shyness and help us determine his needs. Katie picked him up from the shelter the

day he was scheduled to be killed and drove him to the trainer; it was a full day’s trip. Frankie arrived at the boarding/training kennel, settled in quickly, and is adjusting well. Below is a recount of Katie and Frankie's journey.

"Walking Frankie out of the shelter was one of the happiest moments of my life. I knew that he was finally safe and that soon we would be on our way to his temporary home, where he is being boarded with a fantastic trainer. Little Frankie was terrified of everything in the shelter – and for good reason. With his tail between his legs, Frankie and I walked out the door and into the beautiful sunlight and unusually warm weather. We walked towards my car and, as soon as I opened the passenger door to get some more treats for him, Frankie hopped right in. This supposedly “shy” guy was ready to get out of there and I was happy to make that happen for him. The shelter had said that he was very shy with people, but I can disprove that with all of the pictures I took of Frankie within the first 5 minutes we knew each other. We walked around the parking lot (he is TERRIFIC on the leash) so he could relieve himself (because he is already housetrained) and then he jumped right into the backseat of my car and snacked on the chicken I gave him. As we spent these first couple of minutes together, I can happily report that his tail came out from between his legs and began thumping against the backseat. As I spoke to him to let him know that everything would be ok, he showered me with kisses and leaned against me with his squishy head. When taking a good look at Frankie, you can really appreciate how gorgeous he is. Photos don’t do justice to this little brindle beauty with white patches on his chest, all the way around his neck like a collar, and of course on his paws like mittens. What is hard to see through his pictures is that all of his white patches are sprinkled with adorable brown polka-dots!

The long car ride went beautifully as Frankie is a natural in the car. He enjoys sitting up and watching the scenery fly by, but also loves to sit right behind you and lean forward as far as possible to give you kisses. Eventually he fell asleep and, as we got closer to our destination, I began to feel sad even though he would be in capable and loving hands. So, of course, I pulled over at a rest stop and we spent about 30 minutes playing and snuggling – because let me tell you, this guy loves affection. We finally arrived and toured his new space and he was so happy to be able to explore the yard and meet his wonderful trainer. The shelter said he was shy? Strange, because he walked right up to the trainer and nuzzled his face into her side.

To be completely honest, I really had a hard time leaving Frankie. He is so easy to fall in love with that by the end of the day I was completely attached. Yes, he is adorable and has the cutest little mannerisms and, yes, he has such a sweet and gentle personality with a definite comical side and, yes, this extremely soft little guy’s fascination with people and French fries is enough to melt your heart – but there is something about Frankie that I can’t quite put my finger on that truly pulls him to you. He’s got this thing about him that just makes you want to snuggle with him and make his life a great one because he will, without a doubt, bring you more joy than anything else in this world.

UPDATE: I’ve been speaking with the trainer daily, and Frankie is doing wonderfully. He’s great around kids and is excited with other dogs and shows ZERO AGGRESSION! "
