Rudy is a Name a Boxer dog!
Thank you Connie Hanes for naming Rudy: “Hi, I just love looking at your website. We lost our boxer 2 years ago from kidney failure. She was our beloved sidekick for 8 years. We adopted her. I just think this handsome guy reminds me of a Rudy.”

1/28/08 - Rudy has been adopted!!

10/11/06 -

Rudy is a charmer.  Everyone who meets Rudy has fallen in love with this handsome boy….I know he has captured all of our hearts.

Here is the latest on the greatest.

Rudy is housetrained.  He also knows how to sit and come when called (most of the time ;o)).  He is a GREAT cuddle bug and loves to sleep with his foster mom at night. He eats like a Hoover, but retains his puppy physique due to being in motion most of the day.  He has landscaped the yard (digging for gold) and has endeared himself to the neighbors…even with his occasional bark to warn us of any impending danger.

Rudy is one of the sweetest boxers you will have the pleasure to meet; however, be prepared for his energy, curiosity, and puppy antics.  He will need a fenced yard and at least one other canine playmate (he has been living in a multi-dog household along with two cats).  We also feel he would do well in a home without toddlers due to his exuberant nature.  Although he uses a crate, Rudy is currently not left alone for more than a couple of hours during the day.  Like all boxer pups he needs human contact, exercise, and stimulation…not hours alone in a crate.

Rudy LOVES to play with toys and has no problem sharing with his foster boxer sister and brother, which is a good thing, since he takes all THEIR toys.  Rudy’s spirit is a testament to how courageous and magnanimous this breed truly is.  He is anxiously waiting to find a home he can call his own.

9/10/06 - Rudy’s appointment with the neurologist went extremely well.  Two doctors performed a thorough physical and a neurological examination to assess Rudy’s motor and sensory skills.  They found him to be a bright, alert, responsive puppy, and their findings were unremarkable except for his slight head tilt to the left (which has improved even more since his visit).

The doctors discussed several different possible causes for the head tilt.  During his trauma, he may have broken a certain bone in his skull called the temporal petrous bone which houses a nerve that can cause a head tilt.  This nerve is also involved in hearing, so Rudy’s hearing may be affected in his left ear (although we see no discernable evidence of this currently).  Another possibility would have been direct injury to his brain, or injury to other bones surrounding his brain.

Although there are several diagnostic tests that could be run to find out exactly what is causing his head tilt (CT, MRI, BAER test), since Rudy seems to function fine, these tests would not affect how we treat him or affect his prognosis to do well later on so we did not see the need.  There are no restrictions on his activity and he is ready to go!!!

Rudy has also been neutered and has recovered well.

7/16/06 - Rudy is a 3 month old boxer puppy who is one of the most charming dogs I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

Rudy accidentally fell down a flight of stairs and suffered an injury to his head.  His family immediately rushed him to an emergency hospital where he stayed for 9 hours. While at the hospital he received IV medication that I am certain saved his life.  He was then transferred to the family’s regular vet where Rudy stayed for observation for 48 hours.  Rudy’s family loved him very much, but their finances did not enable them to give Rudy the additional medical care he needed so they surrendered him to NBR’s care.

Rudy is a lucky boy and he has made a dramatic recovery.  When he was first released from the emergency hospital, he was blind and could not walk.  The doctors did not think he would recover, but lucky Rudy proved them wrong.  Except for an occasional slight head tilt (which may or may not go away) he appears perfectly normal.  However it is possible that Rudy may suffer from some type of seizures later in life, but this is yet to be determined.  We have scheduled an appointment with a neurology specialist at Tufts to get a more definitive diagnosis/prognosis.

We have taken Rudy to our vet for his inoculations and his initial exam and he was wonderful.  Lucky Rudy makes everyone smile.  He is truly an exceptional puppy.
