Ziggy is a Name a Boxer dog!

Thank you to Mary Theresa Schwartzer for naming Ziggy.
This boxer is named by my husband who has just fallen in love with the breed since we adopted Wally, our white, deaf boxer 4 years ago.

8/24/07 - Ziggy has been adopted!!

7/7/07 -

In Ziggy’s short eight year life span he has had three “forever” homes.  The most recent felt he no longer had the time to give Ziggy….and thought it was best he was dropped off in a shelter.  Obviously, Ziggy would not receive all the love and attention he would need there.

NBR received a call about this senior boy.  We were told by the shelter that Ziggy would just lay in his cage.  One of his eyes seemed extremely irritated and cloudy and needed medical attention immediately.  They said it looked like he finally gave up and was just waiting his turn…waiting for the worst.

We contacted a foster home that was willing to take Ziggy immediately, however, within 24 hours Ziggy was let down once again.  They too had second thoughts and expressed concern that they would not have “the time” to give to this sweet senior boy… However, all hope was not lost due to a wonderful volunteer that stepped up.  She saw his picture and could not bear having him spend another moment in a dark concrete cage.

Ziggy is lean and leggy.  He has that "special senior something" about him.  He is gentle on lead, rode like a champ in the car and met his 3 yr old NBR spoiled foster sister and 2 cat-siblings without much incident (he made it be known he doesn't want to share his meals with the cat, who is used to cleaning up after sloppy dogs).  Our gentle giant submitted to a bath, which he seemed to like. ..after the "shelter" he needed one.

He has bravely endured 2 vet visits including one to an eye specialist.  The diagnosis for his eye was an ulcer, however, the ophthalmologist had concerns that it might be a prerequisite to a tumor.  He currently takes daily medication for his eye ailment.  He is also on a thyroid supplement for an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).  Our next step is to tackle those itchy ears in the upcoming days.  For now, he needs to relax, gain weight, & enjoy his retirement.

His last home "didn't have time for him".  I wish everyone thinking about adding a dog to their family understood the commitment involved - it should be for a lifetime.
