“I am an active duty Soldier currently deployed to Iraq. We recently put our baby girl, Bootsi, to rest at the age of 12 on September 11th. I always envisioned us saying farewell to our beloved Boxer(s) as a family unit however this was not possible. This was the perfect idea to honor a beloved pet. To Bootsi - Baby girl it has been our honor and privilege to have spent the last 12 years loving you and you loving us. It is thru the bearer of your name that we hope the world continues to experience the true magnitude of a pet's love.”

05:05/09: BOOTSI IS READY TO EXPLORE THE WORLD

Bootsi’s eye surgery was a success and she has recovered well. She was also spayed. Her eye needs to be medicated three times daily for a short while, but she looks "as good as new". She is scheduled for a follow-up appointment to have her spay stitches removed and then she will be ready for adoption.
Latest update from her foster mom:

“Bootsi continues to be an amazing little bundle of love and energy. She must go to a home that has K9 companions. Bootsi loves all of her dog buddies and everyone she meets. Bootsi interacts well with all animals; having other animals around has been very beneficial getting her adjusted to a new lifestyle.

Bootsi is doing great with her basic commands but will need someone to continue working with her. Her house training is coming along well but is not yet 100%. She has an accident from time to time, usually because she is too distracted by playtime.

Bootsi would do best in a home where someone is with her most of the day. If left alone for extended periods of time she would need to be confined. She had more than her share of confinement having lived the first years of her life in a kennel environment.

Bootsi is curious and will get into a lot of things if she is bored and left unattended. Bootsi has stopped grabbing everything in sight and is happy with a toy (lots of toys are a plus). Bootsi loves sleeping on the bed and does not like to get out of bed in the morning. She is definitely appreciative to be a part of the family

Bootsi is very active and is a "take me anywhere" kind of girl. We have even learned that she loves to swim. The first time she went into the water she came out and had the funniest look on her face like, "What the heck was that"?… and then she jumped right back in to play.

Bootsi has been a pleasure to foster and is ready for her permanent family. She has done well in her short time here (swimming, fishing, softball, hiking, .....) and we hope she will go to a home that will continue to take her on safe adventures. This Bootsi is made for walking =).”

04/05/09: BOOTSI’S FOSTER MOM says…..“She is an awesome dog”!!!

“Bootsi is adjusting well to a normal lifestyle. Her eyes continue to look horrible but it does not seem to affect her charming disposition…she is an awesome dog!!! She still has a few sores on her legs, most likely from laying on hard ground in a dirty kennel.... they are healing nicely however.
She was coughing the first couple of days but that has gone away since she has finished her medication. I am feeding her three times a day to put a little meat on her. Bootsi is such a sweet, social, easy dog. She just needs a little training on basic manners. We are working on clicker training with her and she is a quick study.

Bootsi has a lot of energy, but good energy, and is VERY playful. She will do best in a interactive home with an active lifestyle; she is like a two year old who is going on 6 months and she just loves her TOYS!!!!!

I do feel she should be placed with another k-9 companion or two since she enjoys the company of all the animals. It would also help her settle in and learn the ropes from a canine perspective. I think it would be a shame for her not to have playmates.

She needs to receive a lot of attention and at this point you do need to keep a close eye on her because she is so intrigued by the newness of everything. Bootsi has to touch all she sees and often has objects that are not for dogs in her mouth, however, you can easily trade them for a toy; she does not care!

Bootsi is enjoying everything: the car, walks, play, toys, the bed ... animals - you name it. She awaits her appointment with the eye specialist at Tuft’s next week in preparation for her eye surgery.”

3/27/09: THE INJUSTICE NEVER ENDS

Twenty-two boxers were surrendered to a shelter and two of these boxers (Bootsi and Sneakers) came in with “Cherry Eye“. Surgery is required to fix this eye condition which would not have been treated at the shelter. We were asked if we could take both dogs into rescue, and we did not hesitate to agree.

Cherry eye is the term used for the prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid. Known by veterinarians as the nictitans gland, this gland aids in the production of tears. Surgical replacement of the gland in its proper location is the only acceptable treatment.

Neither Bootsi nor Sneakers are in very good condition, and they are extremely thin. Their ears were infested with mites and both were covered in urine and feces stains; we had them examined by a vet when they first came into our rescue and they are both being treated with antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection. They obviously were not well cared for and presumably came from another puppy mill-type situation. Both dogs will also need to be spayed.

Overall they are very well adjusted, considering their previous conditions and lifestyle. They seem to be excellent with other dogs and are friendly with people. Like most boxers, they are great in the car. It is apparent they have never lived in a home, therefore, we will be working on their house manners.

Sneakers and Bootsi are scheduled for a consult with an Ophthalmologist at Tufts Animal Hospital in early April. We will update both dogs with individual reports from their foster homes once they have settled in and adjusted. We are happy they are safe and receiving much needed attention.
