11/20/09: Look at me now!
"MY DESTINY!!! This little girl came into my and my senior boxer boy Ty's life like destiny.  We kept the name because it fits her to a tee!  This little girl has come so far: from being afraid of her shadow and living in a home she was not used to, to making it her own.  She loves to redecorate!  She loves to go for rides, dinner at friends, walks are her favorite, and lots of love from her mom and Ty!  The waking hours are my favorite!  She wakes up in her bed she loves at the end of my bed and she rubs herself along the side of my bed and then gives me these kisses....I swear if she could talk she would say every morning....Oh my god!  This is real!  I'm still here! I love it here! Where is my brother, and then she finds him ( on my bed) and brings us her toys, and talks with her little "talking sounds" and kisses us both!  Tiny little tail going a mile a minute...Ty gets a kick out of her.  He wags like I have never seen him wag... all the time...he loves her so much!  He is so patient with her when she wants to play.  Des does these helicopter flippies before we walk and when I get home.  She lifts her whole body off the floor and spins around in a 180 degree turn.  What a joy this has been for all three of us!  If I could choose one word to describe how she has become over the past 6 months it would be "CAREFREE."  My Des is finally living her life, finally able to trust, able to love, relax, run, play, eat without worry, just be a carefree dog....A life well deserved and about time! Thank you for all your help at Boxer Rescue.  Keep up the GREAT work!"

04/29/09: An update from Destiny's foster mom...

"Destiny has this new thing she has been doing.  She leaps out the back door when it is time to go out.  It is funny because she flies through the air like she just went off a diving board.  She is really happy.  Very playful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   She is very interested in becoming my Pilates partner.  She thinks it looks like the best thing and will bark and bat at me.  She is very skittish when others come over, which is not that often. Yesterday when a friend left, she just started to play again, like all was fine.  She definitely likes when everyone is in their place.  She will check on Bob and me and Ty and then she seems secure to sleep or that all is well.  She likes the routine on Mon-Fri more than the weekend.  She is not quite sure what is next on the weekend.  It is interesting to watch her, Destiny is a very funny dog.

She has somehow learned to turn on the TV.  We have no idea how, but it is always on when we get home. She turned the stereo on one day and was listening to Cold Play."

04/07/09: DESTINY’S FATE HAS BRIGHTENED

We were contacted by the same shelter where we rescued Gertrude regarding a boxer who was another victim of a puppy mill.  Destiny had been rescued seven weeks earlier from a high kill shelter by a woman named Tracy who runs a small rescue organization.  Destiny was not adjusting well and they asked for our help.

Destiny ended up in the shelter after being dumped by the owner of the puppy mill.  The county had threatened to press criminal charges against them if they did not bring their kennel up to code.  Rather than spend the money to fix their kennel to meet the required statutes for the State the people decided to sell as many dogs as they could and dropped off the remaining dogs at the shelter.

Tracy went to the shelter after hearing the story and asked for the dog that was in the worst condition.  Destiny was brought out and was so petrified that she had to be carried.  She had numerous urine/concrete burns on her body and had kennel cough.

Tracy worked with Destiny for several weeks to heal her sores, treat her cough, and did everything she could to make her feel more secure.  Poor Destiny was so traumatized that she had to be carried everywhere at first, and then needed to be patiently coaxed to go outside.  Sadly, she seemed to be most comfortable staying in a crate.  She felt Destiny was only making baby steps in her progress. She never saw Destiny wag her tail or do the boxer wiggle.

We are making a vet appointment so we can determine if Destiny’s skin needs more than good nutrition and less stress.  She still has a few sore spots on her body and is gnawing on the pad of her front foot.  We will also have the doctor look at her recent spay scar, to make sure the incision is healing well.

We are thrilled with Destiny’s progress since she has been in her foster home.  She has responded so much more quickly than we had anticipated.  Read an update from Destiny’s foster mom for more of the details:

“Ty, my senior boxer and I met Destiny to take her home after her exhausting road trip.  We were the final leg of her long journey.  She immediately warmed up to Ty and they have been getting along famously since.

I was told she was a great traveler and was very sweet, however, you could see she was very frightened.  Destiny had to be picked up and placed in the car…she was too scared to go in on her own.  Poor girl was so tired and stressed after meeting many new people and seeing new places, not sure of what was coming next.

When she arrived you could tell being in a home was new to her.  We had set up a crate because we were told that she found comfort there.  The first night she went into the crate on her own and fell asleep for a bit with the door open, and then found the dog bed in the bedroom where she spent the remainder of the night.  We were so proud that she felt comfortable enough to be there with us.  She hasn’t gone to her crate since we first brought her home that night and has not slept in it either.

She is eating really well and likes pizza crust and sweetbread.  I know this kind of bread isn’t that great for dogs, but right now she is just living the good life and making up for lost indulgences, plus a little weight on her wouldn’t hurt.

Destiny does not like when she cannot see Ty, and when she finds him, she wiggles, and wags, and licks him.  The second night, Destiny woke up and could not find Ty.  He sometimes goes into our loft upstairs, which we call my husband’s man cave.  Well, Ty came down the stairs and she once again wiggled and licked him, she was thrilled.  Ty is so good with her.  She loves Ty so much.

Yesterday we were out back in the fenced yard on the long leash and the neighbor’s dog barked and she ran in the opposite direction. Well today, when that happened, she ran to the back door.  I liked seeing that she seems to be making sense of where to get her shelter verses just running away.  We absolutely love her!

She just loves to be held and craves human touch.  She already gives kisses and gets all excited when she is told how good she is.  I cannot wait to show her the beach, but she is not ready yet, I know.  Just can’t wait to show her all she has missed in the world.”
