8-29-09 A quick update from Maggie's foster mom:
 
"Maggie is doing great. She has issues with cats, but is not as skittish around new people. She loves her "Kong" and carries it around whenever she gets the chance. Like most boxers I know, she believes she is a lap dog, but with her petite size it is not that bad. She is getting along with Earl the lab SO well. They have been caught spooning and nibbiling on each other (although I think they'd both deny it!) She needs an owner that will take the time to reassure that she is "ok" and take the time to introduce her to new dogs/people. Just a sweet little girl!"

 

 

07/25/09: POOR MAGGIE NEEDS SOME LUCK

Maggie is a five year old female boxer who was surrendered to animal control after having a fight with her boxer sibling.  Maggie was the one who received the brunt of the damage and almost had her ear ripped off.  Maggie was taken to the ER to treat her injuries and she received several stitches to close her wounds.

Maggie did not go home after her surgery at the emergency hospital.  Instead of being able to recover with her family, she was surrendered to the town pound.  The husband did not want Maggie to return home.  He was concerned for his young daughter’s safety if another fight broke out between the two dogs.  We would like to note that these two dogs only had two fights in the years they were together (one minor altercation in 2007 and the most recent).

While we were in the midst of making arrangements for Maggie’s transport to one of our foster homes, we received another call from Animal Control.  They said that Maggie had opened the stitches around her ear.  The ER hospital did not provide an Elizabethan collar for her when she was discharged. 

We paid the medical bill to have Maggie’s ear stitched again since the Town does not provide funds to treat animals with medical issues or injuries.  We also purchased an Elizabethan collar to help prevent her from ripping the stitches open again.

Currently we have Maggie fostered with another dog and she is acclimating herself to her new surroundings.  She may do best as the only dog in the family but it is too soon to make this a definite determination.

Below is an update from her foster home:

“Maggie is a good hearted dog.  She is getting along well with my lab Earl.  She has also seen my cat Lil Bit, but they have not met without Maggie on a lead.  She is a bit skittish when brought into a group of new people, but if approached slowly she is fine.

Maggie seems to be leery of men at first but, once again, if she is approached slowly she warms up quickly.  Her ear is healing nicely, and she does not bother with her stitches at all.

It is amazing what a couple of days can do.  She does have a strong personality, but she has a calm presence….she is a dream.  She knows sit and stay, is great on a leash, and is calm in the car.  MAGGIE IS A GREAT DOG!”
