03/09/11: Miley Lost Her Home And Almost Lost Her life

Miley is a 15 week old female boxer who weighs 17.4 pounds. She was surrendered to Rescue because her family could not afford treatment for a leg injury. She started limping on her left hind leg, which would not bear any weight, so her family took her to an emergency hospital. The doctor took x-rays of the leg and diagnosed her with an injury that required surgery. According to the medical records she had a tibial tuberosity avulsion, which is basically a tearing away of the muscle/tendon from the bone. The family was quoted a price of $3200-$3400 for the surgery, but Miley’s family could not afford the operation. They thought their only other option was euthanasia which they were considering until they were told about Rescue. They were thrilled when they heard the news that NBR would take Miley into our program.

Miley was picked up by one of our great volunteers and taken to an animal hospital to be re-examined by one of the veterinarians we trust. The doctor reviewed the radiographs from the ER hospital and did not agree with their diagnosis. They took more radiographs of both legs for comparison and no difference was seen. "Our" vet felt that everything pointed to a soft tissue injury that required restricted activity but did not require surgery. They kept Miley in the hospital for observation for 8 days to make sure they would see improvement, which they did. She was also treated with acupuncture to help relax her leg muscles.

While under observation the doctor ran a fecal and blood-work. She tested positive for tapeworm and coccidia and she was treated successfully for both. That explains why she is underweight. She was also updated on her vaccinations. We also had her spayed.

Everyone in the hospital as well as our volunteers have fallen in love with this little girl. Miley has beautiful brown eyes that melt your heart.
