06/24/11: Melanie Was
Mislabeled As
Unadoptable
Melanie was rescued by
an organization in the
South that saves dogs
from high risk kill
shelters and transports
them to shelters in the
Northeast. Melanie was
one of 27 dogs that were
sent to one New England
shelter. We received a
frantic call from the
rescue organization in
the South asking us for
our help. Melanie did
not pass the shelter’s
temperament test when
she arrived and was
labeled "unadoptable".
Prior to being
transported to the
shelter, Melanie was
placed in a Southern
foster home for two
weeks by the
organization that saved
her. They also did a
similar temperament test
and they saw no problems
with her. They were
shocked by the shelter's
evaluation and told us
they would never have
transported her there if
they felt she had any
issues at all. We
received a video of the
actual evaluation that
the shelter did of
Melanie and we saw no
aggression issues
whatsoever….what we did
see is typical young
boxer behavior.
NBR picked up Melanie at
the shelter and
transported her to a
foster home. Since she
arrived she has been
nothing but an angel. We
want to note that we did
not post Melanie’s story
until we felt absolutely
sure there was no
validity to the poor
evaluation she was given
by the shelter.
Here is a report
from her new Foster
Home:
"I just
wanted to update you on
Melanie. She is doing
GREAT!! She is such a
GOOD GIRL! We went very
slowly with introduction
to our dog Nakita. They
have progressed from
accepting each other in
the same room (off leash
=) to being best
friends. They now are
great with one another
and love their walks
together. My husband
took off work the first
week she was here so he
could be with them and
make sure introductions
went slowly and
smoothly.
Melanie adores her toys
:) . She has her
favorite ( a squeaky
army bear) that she
loves to play with all
the time. At night
Melanie sleeps right on
top of her mom, although
Nakita still prefers to
sleep in her dog bed on
the floor. The
suggestion of using
tupperware filled with
treats to help divert
any negative behavior
prior to them getting
comfortable with one
another was a great tool
. It really works!
Thank you so much
for letting us foster
Melanie....she is a
doll!!!"
