Jewel is a Name a Boxer dog!

Thank you Jordana for naming Arizona.

I just started my own custom design jewelry website (www.jordanadesigns.com) and every month I will donate a portion of my earnings to a different animal rescue site or shelter. This month, I chose you and Jewel.

TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS

As they say, “time heals all wounds” and Jewel is no exception.  She has come a long way from the sad broken puppy in the initial photos, and has completely healed from her surgeries.  Jewel is thankful for all of the heartfelt emails, donations and prayers throughout her recovery.  Below is a long awaited update written by her foster mom.

“I think back to not so long ago when I had to carry Jewel up and down the stairs in the house and bring her food bowl to her on the couch because she was unwilling to get up to eat.  What an amazing spirit she has.

The hardships that she has endured in life, the trauma of being hit by a car, lying alone, broken and afraid for 2 days in a veterinary hospital, and waiting for a familiar face to come and comfort her…which never arrived.  She had lost her home and her family just when she needed them the most.  Now, thankfully, those are all distant memories and the only reminder is a small scar on the inside of her leg.

Jewel was recently spayed and has recovered quickly.  The biggest problem we encountered while she was recuperating was trying to convince her that it was important to rest until her incision healed.  When presented with a warm lap to lay in she usually agreed.

I watch her now run full speed around the back yard, right on the tail of her little boxer buddy.  I know that as soon as she hears the crinkle of the food bag, no matter where she is in the house, she will be at my side before the first cup can be poured. T his little “Monkey” (which we lovingly call her) is a typical boxer clown.

I am very thankful to have been a part of Jewel’s second chance.  She truly is an amazing dog!!!”

2/23/08 - We are no longer accepting applications for Jewel.

Jewel returned for her follow-up appointment with her orthopedic surgeon.  X-rays showed that her bones are healing nicely (stitches and bandages had already been removed), and the doctors said to slowly introduce more activity.

Jewel is living with other dogs and cats and is doing famously.  She is housebroken and sleeps with her foster parents.  She is a bed hog and loves to push her foster dad to the edge of the bed so she can place her head on the pillow.

She does have one unusual trait.  When she is at the glass door looking out, if a vehicle comes up the driveway she tends to back away as if she is afraid.  We are assuming it is because of her traumatic experience when she was hit by a car and then driven around for hours in severe pain.  However, when she goes for rides with her foster mom she does well riding in the car…a true boxer.

Jewel’s favorite toy is a fuzzy covered tennis ball with a squeaky tail.  She wings the ball into the air with gusto and then searches for it frantically.  Because of this game she has earned the name “wing nut” by her foster family.  No longer restricted to cage rest, Jewel enjoys exercise…she has a lot of pent up puppy energy to expend.  She is a speed demon. She loves to run full speed in the family room and streak over the sofas and then flops down. …very cute!

Jewel is trained on an electric fence and also does well on a leash.  She has never pulled when walking.  Initially, she would not take treats or eat from her food bowl.  We would have to hand feed her.  Happily her appetite has returned.  Now, the princess eats without a problem and has gained much needed weight.

Jewel has an appointment to be spayed.  Once she has recovered from surgery she will be ready to be adopted.  We cannot say enough about her disposition.  Jewel is good natured, sweet and affectionate.  She is one great boxer.  A true jewel!

ANOTHER BROKEN PROMISE...

We responded to a call from one of the veterinary hospitals saying that a family was opting to euthanize their 7 month old injured boxer due to financial limitations.  This pretty female boxer, we named Jewel, was reported to have been struck by a car and suffered a broken leg and other injuries.  She had been given limited care for two days before we were asked to take over her treatment.  Examination had revealed soft tissue injuries to the medial left pelvic limb, as well as an obvious deformity of the distal left tibia (both of the bones in her left rear leg were broken and she had open lacerations).  When we transferred her to Tufts Animal Hospital, she was brought into the hospital on a gurney; Jewel was in considerable pain and demonstrated significant distress with any form of manipulation.

The first order of business for the doctors at Tufts was to give Jewel some relief from her pain.  They administered strong pain medication and applied a padded “Robert Jones” bandage to give better support to her broken leg.  The doctors confirmed that she had a displaced mid-diaphysis transverse fracture of the left hind tibia and fibula. This was an open fracture and she also had a nasty wound to her hock which was a concern.  Luckily x-rays did not show any injuries to the thoracic and abdominal regions or to the pelvis itself.  The orthopedic surgeon was hopeful that Jewel’s leg could be put back together with a metal plate.  Surgery was scheduled for the following morning and everything proceeded as planned.  The doctors were amazed that Jewel’s demeanor changed so quickly after her leg was repaired.  Since she was relieved of her agonizing pain she was up and walking on her own the very next day.  This sweet puppy is recovering quietly in her foster home and is scheduled for follow up x-rays in 6 to 8 weeks.

She will need to be spayed after she is finished healing.

So many animals are abandoned and needlessly neglected because, when the going gets tough, their families choose not to take the responsibility for their care.  The reality is that these animals suffer physically and emotionally.  When you bring an animal into your home please remember that you are supposed to be their guardian FOREVER.

 A message from Winslow's dad:

It is with a heavy heart that I sit here with Winslow to write about another one of his friends.  This poor baby Jewel was not only hit by a car, but driven around with her broken leg in search of an inexpensive fix…for two days!!!!

Courage is…being seven months old and withstanding excruciating and senseless pain.

Courage is…fighting to survive when you’re all alone.

Courage is…enduring the days, hoping your family comes through that door to take you home.

Courage is…still giving your unconditional love to us even after you have been hurt so badly.

Courage is… for you to help save this poor girl and, if she has already blessed a family, help to save one of her friends.

Winslow has already showed us, his family, how to be better “people” and we have witnessed the beauty of his forgiveness.  Please click on any pup, including Winslow, and donate. Your donation will buy these heroes a little more time and, more importantly, a chance to better the life of a lucky person or family.  Winslow wants to assure you that even if you click on his button, all of the money will go to his friends who need it the most.

More updates to come on this beautiful girl Jewel as she fights back…

 Love,

 The Winslow Family
Peanut, Winslow, Sharon, and Barry
