"
Ali"
Adopted 12/06/02
11/16/01 - Ali had his prednisone dose dropped and has been able to go through the night (10pm to 5am) without having to go out. His spinal tap on Nov. 12th was clear so his prednisone dose was dropped again. It is now 15 mg every other day for the next six weeks. He has one more dose (15 mg every third day) before he is off meds completely! What a recovery!
10/12/01 - Ali has suffered from chronic intermittent neck pain for 11 months. We have spent thousands of dollars on x-rays, ultrasound, myelogram, blood tests, spinal taps etc. and he was finally diagnosed in August at the University of Pennsylvania. Ali has steroid responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA), an inflammation of the soft tissues around the brain and spinal cord. According to the vet, young boxers may be predisposed to this condition. SRMA is a condition that requires long term treatment with high doses of steroids. Because Ali has apparently had this condition for a long time, he may need additional immunosuppressive therapy in the future. In August, Ali began treatment with a steroid dose of 120 mg/day and we are currently down to a dose of 15 mg/day and we've had no sign of Pain! He will need a repeat spinal tap in 6 weeks (Nov. 12) and, if it is normal, he will go to 15mg every other day. We are nearing the end of his treatment!!
Ali is suffering from a side effect of steroid therapy - increased water
consumption and increased urination. For this reason, Ali needs someone who is home all day or gone for short periods of time. He needs to go outside at least every four hours, both NIGHT and day. If you miss his signals, he will have an accident in the house. He is crate trained and loves to play and bark! This wonderful boy needs a special home with special people to take care of him.
