Belle" |

| 8/15/00
- Angel Belle had her eye surgery, was spayed, vaccinated, and heartworm tested. She looks and feels great. Now that she is feeling better her personality is coming out. She could not be a sweeter more gentle dog. She has been through so much and needs a family of her own. If you think she would fit into yours E-mail Jamie Meadow at

We were contacted by another breed rescue person about a Boxer that was hit by a car. This sweet Boxer girl was in a high kill shelter in North Carolina. The local rescue was unable to take her into their rescue program and, since she was scheduled to be killed the next day if no one claimed her, we decided to try to get her to one of our veterinarians in NY. With the miraculous help of several wonderful people who volunteered to drive in NC, VA, MD and NY, we were able to put together a CUR run. She left at 8 AM and arrived at 1 AM the next morning. The drive was exhausting for everyone, but Angel Belle endured all with grace and charm. Below is a message from one of the drivers along the route: "That poor, poor, sweet, sweet Boxer. She looked like walking road kill, she looked like she had been sliding down the asphalt. Her tummy was totally raw, her leg was scraped and the place on her head was terrible, not to mention her EYES! Not just the cherry things, but no one had bothered to clean them, one looked like it had a thick film of dried super glue on it. She has at least 20 ticks in each ear, it just broke my heart. She is so SWEET and she deserves 1000 times better than that. I hope she gets a GREAT HOME!!" Everyone who has
met her has fallen in love with this little girl. One of the people who
drove her to safety called her a Carolina "Angel".
Another one of her drivers called her "Belle", because
"she acted like a true southern lady" and did not complain
despite her apparent discomfort. The vet estimates her age at about 1
1/2 years, and considering what she has been through she is in pretty
good shape. Besides her scrapes and bruises, and a nasty gash to the
side of the head, she has a condition called "cherry eye".
"Cherry eye" is the term often used to describe protrusion of
the tear gland associated with the third eyelid membrane in the corner
of the eye. In older times, the prolapsed gland was treated like a small
tumor; it was simply removed. This was before the full significance of
the gland was realized. The gland of the third eyelid is very important
for the production of tears which keep the eye moistened. Without
tears the eyes are susceptible to a condition called "dry
eye". Not only is dry eye uncomfortable, its on-going treatment is
often frustrating and time-consuming. We would like Angel Belle to
maintain the greatest amount of functioning tear producing tissue
possible and this means surgically replacing the gland in its proper
location. However, her doctor would like to give her time to recover and
gain strength before performing the surgery to repair her eyes and also
spay her. |
