We have been fostering Monty now for two weeks and this guy is just amazing!!  We couldn’t love him any more, he is such a great dog! Monty is the biggest “mush”. He just wants to cuddle all the time and is generally mellow. Which makes him the perfect companion for the little ones and the seniors in our life. Don’t get me wrong though, when it comes to playing with us or other dogs, this guy loves to get into it. There is no way that this dog knows that he is 6 years old or that he has anything wrong with his joints. He is a great play dog. He loves to run and jump around. He is always instigating playtime with my 4 year old (80 lb) female boxer. It’s too funny to see this little 60 lb guy go up to her and clock her on the head just to get her to get up and tackle him. They love to jump on each other and chase each other. When they
wear each other out, they often go for a nap on the dog beds together to fall asleep. Occasionally Monty will walk away from playing with a limp for a few minutes, but it doesn’t bother him at all; he doesn’t seem to care. Other than that, we see no signs at all of the hip displasia or arthritis. Monty happily runs up and down our stairs all day long with no problem.

Monty is a great listener and loves to please, as most boxers do. He knows most commands, like sit, stay, stop, no and lie down. He walks great on a leash too. He is a great eater and has put on a good amount of weight since we’ve had him here. He also sleeps really well, although he has been known to let out the occasional snore! Monty loves to wake up at 6 AM on the dot every morning. I have no idea where this behavior came from, but we are already training him on the command “go back to sleep, Monty”.

I am also thrilled to report that Monty’s anxiety issues have drastically decreased since he has been with us. In fact, at our home, they have completely disappeared!! We are so thrilled for him. The first 2 times we left him alone in the house (with our dog), he was in a crate for 1 hour. Both times, he bent the bars on the crate and drooled a lot while we were gone (I told you this boy is no weakling). So, we started to test him at home without the crate and we were so thrilled with the results. As long as he is not in the crate, he is as happy as could be to stay alone when he needs to. He has been alone in the house several times so far, including a 5 hour period one day. He has never touched anything that wasn’t a dog toy and there has been no drool. We even left out plenty of temptations, such as shoes, a bag of tissue paper, magazines on the floor, tissue boxes and towels – he never touched a thing. It is such a relief to know that I can leave him here anytime with full run of the house and know that he will be ok and my house will be ok.

I believe that any home where someone is in the house with him the majority of the time will experience the same great results that we have. Because I am home most of the time, I feel that he is comfortable during the times that I do leave. I think Monty would do best in a home where someone is home a good deal of the time. I feel that he would really love an environment with children and or seniors around. He really loves being with another dog, and I think that this greatly helps with his anxiety. Monty is a “submissive”, so he would do very well with a “dominant”. It would be best if the other dog in the house was around the same size as him or smaller.

Monty is an amazingly loving and gentle dog for all that he has been through. With the love and security that he deserves, he will make a fantastic addition to a very lucky family.

09/03/03 - Monty Update

Unfortunately we have some sad news about poor Monty. After spending some time with Monty we realized that on and off he had a slight limp. We brought him in to be x-rayed and found out that he has a mild case of Arthritis on his right side (probably caused by neglect .. being left outside on a cold surface) and hip dysplaysia ( a rear end lameness resulting from a problem in the structure of the hip joint). It is such a shame because Monty loves to be ACTIVE and PLAY. He always initiates play with his foster sister. Although he does have these two conditions he is still able to go on leash walks and do all other activities a normal boxer does.. car rides etc. Monty will need to be kept o a joint supplement to ease his discomfort......this is not expensive.

Monty needs a quieter home with a less active dog or no other dog. Monty is one of the SWEETEST , LOVING boxers we have ever met... read below...please do not let his unfortunate condition stop you from adopting this sweet baby, he will bring joy to any household.

08/07/03 - Monty Update and New Pictures

Small children are ok!!

I have been fostering Monty for one week and I can sum up his Wonderful personality in one word "MUSH".

Monty is a doll, he is a sweet , gentle boy. He is 100% housebroken, walks great on a leash, loves the car, sleeps great , eats great, and is EXTREMELY affectionate. He loves to cuddle on the floor or the doggy couch with anyone that appreciates his company. Monty is also a great playmate for his foster sister Karma... they love to roll around , wrestle and nibble on each other, they can go at it for hours. Even when Karma (who is only 2) pushes him a little too far he is a gentlemen.... Karmie can be a nudge...

The only negative about Monty is that he clearly does not like to be alone.  Unfortunately his foster mom and dad work full time and we are having to crate Monty. We tried leaving Monty loose in the kitchen but he in not ready for that. Monty gets let out in the middle of the day but it is clear that he is not comfortable with being alone... he is reluctant to get in the crate and drools a lot. This is not unusual behavior for a rescue dog ... especially one who has been abandoned by his owners in the past.

We do not know much about his history but my guess is that someone loved this boy very much and was forced to abandon him. He is so sweet to humans and other animals that he had to be raised with love.

The best home for Monty is one that has shorter work hours, a stay at home mom/dad, retired, or works from home. I have no doubt that Monty will get over his fear of being alone. He has already made progress.. but he needs the reassurance of a family that loves him and a period of time with a regular routine.

If you think you could provide a good home for Monty please email me boxerrescue@optonline.net.

07/29/03 - Monty

This was a funny day... I go to pick up a dog from a shelter, and he appears to be around 4 or 5 years old. His teeth make him appear older, because they are worn down, but this could be from him chewing on something hard (rocks, a metal fence post, etc.) He was so happy to see me, I was flattered. What a sweet dog. He came with this stranger without a backward glance, allowed me to take him out of his run and put a new collar on him, and then boost him into the crate in my car - grabbed around the waist by a total stranger - and was happy to be with me! This dog has the true heart of a boxer.

We went to the vet, got him all his shots, and he'll be neutered on Wednesday. Though he wanted to greet all the other dogs at the vet's office I kept him near me, and he didn't protest; he just settled down on the floor to wait to be called. Monty is the sweetest of dogs. He appears to understand commands, and though a little rusty on them, after a couple repetitions, he seemed to remember what he was supposed to do - and didn't fail to do it!

Please contact Monty's agent for an appointment to meet him if you feel yours is the perfect home.
