We are always sad when one of our dogs come back to our our rescue program.  Unfortunately Deuce was not receiving the proper exercise he needed, and proved to have too much energy for the family that adopted him.

The best type of home for Deuce will have a fenced yard, and another active dog that likes to play.  Because of his exuberance it would be best if there were no young children in the home.  Deuce will make a great companion for someone who wants a new friend in their active lifestyle.

11/08/03 -

Deuce finally got the OK from the doctors and now enjoys being a normal dog again. The doctors said his legs look great. The bones have healed and the screws and plates are solid.

For the past two weeks we have been taking him on walks, and yesterday he was pretty much let loose.

He gets along great with our other dogs, even though he has several months of stored up energy to release and wants to play even more than Sage who is also about 1 year old.

Everything I wrote before about him is still true, great dog! If Deuce is around more than a week or two I will update again, once he has a chance to adjust to life outside the crate. In both of the new pictures Deuce is on the far right.

As you can see from the new pics, there are no casts on Deuce's legs. Actually there haven't been since his surgery, since he has plates in his legs to attach the bones. Although Deuce is still spending most of his time in his crate recovering from surgery, he manages to keep a positive attitude.

The day will soon come when he will be able to run and play without reinjuring his legs, but he still needs to get x-rays and the doctor's OK.

I still can't say enough good things about this wonderful boxer-boy, but I know whoever adopts him will be some very lucky people.

09/02/03 -

Duece has been in our home recovering from his surgery for almost a week now and I can't imagine a better more well behaved dog. He just loves every person or dog he meets. He briefly encounters our three dogs on his way out to go to the bathroom several times a day and is great with them.

Duece was also reported to be fine with the resident cat at the foster home he stayed in before his surgery. The ideal home for Duece would have someone at home for at least part of the day to help with his recovery. Duece would do well as an only dog, or I'm sure Duece would get along well with just about any other dog. If he does go to a home with another dog, his new owners would need to understand the seriousness of his surgery, and his need for a lot of quiet time to rest and recover (he will need 4-6 weeks of crate rest from the time this is written). It's been less that 2 weeks since his surgery and Duece already thinks his legs are ready for anything. Like any other 10 month old boxer, he wants to play play play! Although it's truly unbelievable how resilient these dogs are, the urge to let him jump around and play must be resisted. For now we limit his play to sitting on the bed or couch and playing with a chew toy such as a nylabone or eating peanut butter from a kong. This usually keeps him busy long enough for both of us to fall asleep for a little nap.

Deuce is a wonderful dog in every way and I can guarantee that if we did not already have three dogs of our own his picture and biography would go straight to the "adopted" section of this page and he would stay right here with us.

8-22-03  - Deuce had his surgery on Tuesday and is doing as well as can be expected. Luckily both his front legs were straightened and repaired. The fear was that one of his legs was too damaged to be fixed and would have to be removed, but thank goodness this was not the case. However his fractures had started to heal which made the surgery much more difficult. Our orthopedic surgeon placed metal bone plates and screws in both legs to give them supportive strength. True to form, sweet boy Deuce is being a good patient and letting the staff at the hospital treat him with no problems even though he is in a lot of pain. His legs are swollen (normal post op condition) and he is not walking on his own yet. Deuce will stay at the hospital until he can get up and around on his own. He is expected to be on his own 4 feet by next week, but will need many weeks of crate rest before he is allowed to run again. We are anxious for the day when we can watch him romp and play. Deuce is such a good boy and we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to save his life.

08/18/03 - THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!!

Meet 10 month old Deuce - the FOURTH dog needing major orthopedic surgery to come into our rescue program within 2 weeks. Deuce's story is one of heartbreak and one that truly speaks to the heart and soul of the boxer dog.

Deuce is an owner-surrendered dog that came to us via a veterinarian's office in PA. Both bones (the radius and ulna) in each of Deuce's front legs are broken. His original family allowed this dog to live with the pain of 2 broken legs for over a week before deciding if they would pay to treat him. The vet was told that Deuce was hit by a car - whether this is how his legs were broken or not, you can decide. When the family was told that it would cost $3,000 to fix this 10-month-old's legs, the vet was told to have him euthanized.

Deuce made such a wonderful impression at the vet hospital that they made it their mission to convince these people to turn Deuce over to rescue. Two days later Deuce was ours! With the help of volunteers, Deuce was transported from PA to NY (almost 500 miles). He went to the orthopedic surgeon today and is scheduled for extensive surgery on both legs tomorrow. Deuce's recovery time will be approximately 6 - 8 weeks - and we're hoping that we will be able to find him a loving home to call his own where he can recover.

Below is a note from one of our kind volunteers who transported Deuce to safety:

“When I picked up Deuce last night, he had been traveling for over 8 hours. I met two of the wonderful volunteers that drove him and Vegas from PA to NJ - they were almost in tears just looking at this boy. With the pain he must be in and such a long trip, Deuce is full of love and typical boxer sprit. He even tried to do his version of the bendy for us. He was wonderful in the car and he actually can get around quite well with his splints on. Through it all, Deuce has proven himself to still be more then willing to give people love, to enjoy belly rubs, and rewards any sign of kindness with sweet kisses.”

If you can give this gentle boy love, and have a place in your heart and home for this beautiful fawn and white boy, please fill out an application and indicate that your heart is as big as Deuce's.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please fill out an online application first.  Then e-mail the contacts below.  Be sure to include your full name, city, state, and area code in the subject line of your message.
