10/14/03 - Rudy

Little Rudy is curled up next to me on the couch as I type this message. Anything but rude, Rudy is one of the most polite and well-behaved Boxers I've ever met. He waits for me to pat the couch a few times before he gently climbs up to find a spot nearby. After one day with his new name, he's already responding like it was his name all along.

I picked up Rudy at the CACC (city shelter) where he was surrendered by his family; they said there were too many animals in the house. Everyone at the shelter wanted the chance to say goodbye to the little fella before he left. Anyone that's been to a large city shelter knows that he must have made quite an impression in his short time there to win over so many hearts.

Rudy is 1 and a half years old and he has a soft, shiny, puppy-like coat. He has all his shots and was neutered so he's all set to go. Rudy is a bit under weight (see photos), but he'll put on the pounds after a few weeks of nutritious meals and work outs at the gym. ;-) He got his name because, like the little underdog "Rudy" from the Notre Dame football movie, what Rudy lacks in size he makes up with heart. I have him on a special diet right now until his stomach calms down. He LOVES to eat. He seems to be house trained -- no problems yet (knock, knock). I leave him in his crate while I'm gone, and he's content to wait there until I get back.

Somebody trained little Rudy very well. He knows 'sit'. He walks very well on a leash. He is great with other dogs. I brought him to the dog run a couple times and everyone (dogs and people) all love Rudy. He seems to like kids but, since we know very little about his background, we will not consider placing him in a home with young children. He barely growls if a dog gets aggressive with him while on a leash, and he's never instigated any confrontations. I have yet to hear him bark. When off the leash at the dog run, he's all play. He plays very well and seems to know the limits of playtime aggressiveness.

Rudy will make a great addition to your family. Rudy is the canine for you if you're looking for a young mellow Boxer who is well-behaved and full of love.
