12-29-2002 Gage

Well one week has gone by, and I feel that Gage has been with me forever. He listens very well to commands, and is eager to please. My sisters adore him already and the cat just isn't an issue (happy to say). He is getting along splendidly with Barley. We took a ride to the beach this weekend, and he really got a kick out of hanging out by the ocean and walking along the beach as the water rushed in at his feet. He found out salt water is not his thing.

I really am so grateful for the assistance that you all gave to me to have Gage in my life. You are doing a wonderful thing, not just for the breed, but for the dogs themselves, and the families' lives that they enrich so much. I hope that in your daily struggles you can remember this, and know that there are many people, like me, who are so thankful for your efforts.

12/18/02 - New Pics  & update

As you can see by his new pictures, Gage is doing wonderful in his foster home. He is much more relaxed and happier than in the kennel. What we thought may have been allergies are no longer an issue, his feet are fine and although he still has a bit to go he has put on a good amount of weight.

He is with his foster sister Marla (1 1/2 year old female boxer). Marla is a little bit more hyper than Gagey, but they have become great friends and playmates. I don’t think Gage has met a person or a dog who he does not like.

It is confirmed that Gage is an absolute cuddle bug. There is nothing he likes more than to cuddle next to his foster parents and watch TV, he is extremely attentive and gives as much affection as he takes. He loves long walks and car rides too!

He is a special boy and would make a great addition to any family.

Gage had his cat-test this morning, and although he seems interested in them, it is possible to get his attention while a cat is in the room. This means that with supervision and additional training, he can probably co-exist with cats and eventually become friends. Because we don't know his past history with cats, he would need to be separated from them when no one is home.

Gage is really doing well - we've been taking him out for long leash walks, and he always welcomes us with wags and wiggles. He's still too thin, and may have allergies, which is why his feet are discolored. We've put him on a special low-allergen dog food, and hope this will clear up soon. He can't wait for his new family to come and adopt him; he's waiting!

11/03/02

Today, Gage got his first bath! I finally had a chance to get him in the tub... what a sweetheart. I'm not sure whether he knew what we were doing to him, but after a few seconds, he decided he loved it! He gave me no trouble as I scrubbed him and cleaned some of the gunk out of his ears (the vet will get the rest, when they neuter him tomorrow), and didn't seem to upset with my trimming his nails. He didn't appreciate the cage dryer in the grooming room, but he went to bed nice and warm, clean and dry. He loved drinking out of the sprayer! With that tongue, it's probably a challenge for him to have a regular water bowl. We'll post new pictures of this love-bug soon!

11/01/02 - Gage

Gage is one of our newer boys; he'll be neutered on Monday, and will then be ready to move into his new home. It's too bad no one give out Green Stamps anymore; he'd come in really handy with that tongue! Yes, Gage's tongue sticks out, even when his mouth is closed. It gives him the cutest, goofy expression! I know these are horrible pictures, but I didn't have anyone to hold the leash for me, so I had to "shoot through the fence..." I hope to have better pictures soon.

The first time I saw Gage, he was lying in his cage at the animal shelter, just looking at me. He didn't move or wiggle - it was as though he was thinking "what are they going to do to me now??" He obviously can't figure out why his owner dumped him - "moving" I think, was their excuse for no longer wanting to care for this sweet boy. He came along with me, without complaint, and even put up with an obnoxious Lhasa Apso in the crate next to him, who insisted on barking in Gage's face for most of the 1 1/2-hour trip home! What a tolerant boy - he never made a peep, just kept standing up, turning around and lying back down again, in an attempt to calm down the little dog.

Gage looks as though he's been really stressed lately. We don't know what his former life was like, but he's been licking his feet a lot, which is a nervous habit. The vet will take a look at that and I'll ask what we can use to get them back to their former sparkly white. This is a really cute dog - fairly large; I haven't weighed him yet, but I think he'll go about 70 lbs. or so. Because he isn't yet neutered, we haven't had him with another dog, but my hunch is that he won't have any issues with them. If you'd like to foster Gage (or better yet, adopt him!) please contact us as soon as possible.
