12/18/03 - Ida

Ida is a 1.5-2 year old flashy fawn female with natural ears and a docked tail.  She weighs 48 pounds and needs to put on some weight.  She was taken out of a no-kill shelter in Ohio that apparently got her off death row in another shelter where she was scheduled to be put to sleep.  She has recently had puppies, and her nipples are still quite swollen and full of milk.  She was also bleeding quite a bit, most likely from having puppies recently.  Apparently, the story the shelter told NBR was that someone stole her puppies then dumped her in the shelter.  They said she was very depressed when she first got there.  Poor girl!!  She got her shots at a vet in Ohio and was determined to be heartworm negative.  Ida had a nasty case of kennel cough when we first got her 2 weeks ago. The vet gave her antibiotics and cough medicine for that, and it has cleared up fine.  We have been compressing her nipples per the vet's instructions to try and bring down the swelling, and it has come down considerably.  There is one nipple which still seems large.  We took her back to the vet when we discovered she also had tapeworms (got medicine for that) and they gave her additional antibiotics to try and get some more swelling out of her nipple.  She was spayed today.  Ida is a real love and a happy girl!  She is full of boxer wiggles for everyone she meets, including a few of my cousins (3 year old, 5 year old, infant).  She has been great with our 2 cats, and pretty much ignores them for the most part.  We're not sure how she is with other dogs- she hasn't had a chance to meet many since she just got over the contagious kennel cough.  She loves to play fetch in our fenced yard with a tennis ball or her Kong.  She also will play for hours with the stuffed toys we have given her.  She is crate-trained and is perfectly happy in her crate while we are not home.  She is also house broken other than a couple of minor accidents.  I believe she has had some training in the past as she does know how to sit and shake paws, though she does not do it 100% of the time when asked.  She walks well on a leash and doesn't pull too hard.  She's a great dog, and she's beautiful!  We love her :)
