Bella

Adopted 5/20/02

4/29/02 - Bella  is a 3 year old boxer mix (with shepherd or sheltie) who has come a long way to join our rescue group. She is from Colorado and was found in Brooklyn without any way to locate her people. She is spayed and up to date on shots, heartworm negative. Her foster Mom reported that she is very well behaved, does not need a crate, is housebroken and knows many commands (see below).  Her big favorite is playing ball, and she even brings it back to play some more. Her ideal home would be with someone who was at home a lot as she has gone through a lot of changes, She is good with other dogs, not sure about cats yet. Do you have a place that Bella can now call home?

Bella's first night and day were a success.  Being house-broken, liking other dogs and being well trained (come, sit, down, paw, roll-over and fetch) made this transition much easier than expected.  She is playing well with her foster brothers (male 80 lb alpha boxer and male 14 lb. Shi-Tzu).  She seems to like men, women and children too.  She is a smart, nondestructive, non-aggressive, happy, tail-wagging, quiet, confident girl that takes pride in being clean.  Not only does she maintain her hygiene, but also cleans up any droplets of food after eating.  She made herself right at home, but then did have a hard time deciding which toy was her favorite.  Was it the rope with knots that first caught her attention upon entering the house and proceeded to run thru the house with, or perhaps it is the real beef bone?  She is content to sleep anywhere (floor, dog bed, couch, people bed, doggie bean bag chair, papasan rocker, papasan chair), but listens well when told to get off.  She loves treats and having her belly rubbed.  She is curious and very interested in everything I do.   Going for rides in the Jeep are tops on her list.

Due to the weather, we were inside today.  Hopefully, we can get out during the week and play with the kids? play ball? frisbee???  I'll let you know how we make out.

I attempted to file her nails, but had no interest in me touching her feet.  Perhaps the days/weeks of pounding the pavement is still taking its toll.  She does cry and pace occasionally as if she is looking for someone/something-sad to watch-she must miss her owner/family.

I believe she will do well in almost any home with or without other dogs.  She is a very independent sweet girl.

4/28/02 - Bella  is very intelligent and very well-behaved.  She knows a number of commands and some tricks:  she sits, downs, rolls over, plays dead, gives paw, gives five, high fives, plays fetch and gives the ball/stick back.  I'm sure there are many other things she knows to do, that I don't know the commands for.  She is not bad on the leash.

She is house-broken and is not destructive.  She did not do well in the crate; cried terribly and eventually got herself out - so that was a one-time experiment.  She sleeps well all night.

She is not overly friendly on the street, to people; and she is an excellent watch dog; but once the people are in the house - she is very friendly.  With other dogs, she is submissive.  I've had her in the dog run several times and the other dogs have chased her around and picked on her.  She could lose a little weight; she has small bones.  Right now she is about 55 pounds, I think she could be 45 or less.  Although she is a mix, she has that typical boxer posture when she sits and her coat is a typical boxer coat.

She is not as affectionate as my boxers have been, she is satisfied just to be able to see me.  It is fine if I am in the next room.  She feels no need to help me cook, compute, clean, etc.  She doesn't avoid being petted, but neither does she seek it out.  She also does not lick faces.

Whatever her past has been, she doesn't seem to have been physically abused: she doesn't cower if I raise my hand or pick up a rolled up newspaper.

I think she would do best in a home with someone who is home most of the time, although in the week I've had her, she seems to bark less now, when I have been away.  Everybody who has met her, thinks she is beautiful and very smart.
