4/17/01 - Update from Beau's foster Mom "I just wanted to give you an update on Beau -- everything is going well -- his meds are coming along -- so are his baths (his skin is still a little flaky but looking better where all the fur is gone). He seems very happy - his nub is always wiggly -- he is great with the kids - very gentle -- he has even barked!!!!! When we come home and the other dogs start he gets in there with them.
I thought he might have had some food aggression at first because he would growl if you stood too close to the bowl - but now I can hold the bowl and he's fine and he is also fine with the other dogs in the same bowl. I haven't tried the cats again yet - but will probably test him again soon. This past weekend I had them all in the backyard Buddah chases the ball like crazy -- Buster could care less but what really amazed me is Beau running around like a young pup -- he likes sticks better than balls -- because I was also trying to clean up a little back there (from all the branches falling) and he just wanted to play tug of war with me every time I picked up a branch!!! He even chased after a few.
So....... everything is
good and he seems well and adjusted!!! and we love him!!!!
4/5/01 - Beau is another older dog with a sad story! He was found recently wandering in a blinding snow storm and taken to the shelter. Since his owners never came forward, rescue was called in. Due to severe hair loss and skin abnormalities, Beau was examined by several vets before it was determined that he was not contagious to other dogs and could be moved to a foster home. He has tested negative for mites and the hair loss is thought to be caused by a thyroid condition - the results of that test are not yet back. He does have a skin yeast infection for which he is being treated with oral medications as well as being bathed regularly with medicated shampoo. Beau will be re-evaluated regarding neutering once his health issues are cleared up.
This is one sweet dog! He LOVES everyone he meets and acts like they are his long lost best friends. He was wonderful at the vets office thru all of the poking, prodding and scrapings. Beau likes other dogs and is interested but not aggressive towards cats. He is completely housebroke and has excellent manners. The vet estimated his age somewhere between 8 and 10 years - but he certainly acts much younger!
Beau's foster Mom writes: "Beau was great in the bath -- he just sat there and didn't move -- he let me wash him and dry him off. He has been great with the other dogs -- I don't think he is used to laying on a couch -- he was very weary when we invited him up -- but loved it once he was there and covered with a blanket -- he stayed there for the rest of the evening -- both mornings though I've found him sleeping in the other room on the dog bed (while my boys are still on the couches) and he's slow to wake and that's okay - the boys come in a greet him and his nub starts a wagging and before you know he's at the door ready to go!!!
Thanks so much for bringing
him into our lives -- he is wonderful -- and loveable! He minds very
well and knows sit and down. Today his skin looked not as red
underneath -- I tried to be gentle when I was washing that part and his back
of his neck. He's a great old guy."
