"
Elly"
This dog has been adopted but has not yet completed the two week "trial period" in it's new home. Should the placement prove to be a poor fit for dog and/or family, he/she will be moved to the AVAILABLE section on the Available Dogs page.
6/23/01 - Elly is recovering wonderfully from her surgery. She is using her leg more and more every day and full usage is expected within 6 months. The way she runs and plays with the other dogs is amazing! She is definitely feeling better as well - she now does all those things typical of a boxer puppy her age. Watch out if you leave your shoes or clothes lying around. This is one of those rare times that it's nice to see a dog get into mischief!
Elly will be traveling to your forever home shortly. Here she will complete her lengthy recovery with her Boxer Brother that was adopted from rescue last year!
We want to thank everyone for their generous support of Elly's surgical expenses. Without all of you we would not be able to assist dogs with extreme medical needs such as Elly's. We hope to update Elly's web page with new pictures and information so everyone can see what they've helped to accomplish!

5/30/01 - Eloise is a wonderfully sweet, affectionate, happy 6 to 8 month old brindle female boxer puppy who has suffered extreme pain and neglect in her short life. She was picked up by a dog warden in the Buffalo, NY area, after being abandoned at a busy intersection with a broken leg - most likely caused by being hit by a car. She was housed at the animal control kennel for ten days waiting for someone to claim her - that never happened. During this time, it was noted that she had limited use of her back legs and she would often drag them behind her rather than use them. X-rays taken confirmed that her right hind femur was broken in two just below the hip joint and that surgery would be required to repair the damage.
The Animal Control Officer contacted GVBR for assistance and we immediately scheduled an examination for Elly at Cornell University Hospital for Animals. Several wonderful volunteers rallied to transport Elly there the very next day - as the original vet feared the bone could re-break and possibly compound (break thru the skin) at any time.
The Veterinarians at Cornell had hoped the leg could be repaired with a pin, but during surgery, they found the damage to be far more extensive than originally thought. The surgery was also complicated by the fact that the injury was over three months old and severe atrophy (muscle waste) had taken place. They were forced to remove the femoral head (the top of the thigh bone were it fits into the hip socket). This is the same procedure often performed for dogs with severe hip dysplasia. During the healing process, the body will form a false joint allowing the dog to regain mobility of the leg!
The good news is: Elly's prognosis is very good! The only long-term affect expected is a probable limp. After recovery is complete, the vets at Cornell feel Elly will experience little or no long term discomfort from this terrible ordeal. The more exercise she gets during recovery - the better use she will have of her leg in the future.
The bad news is: due to the extensive nature of her injuries, surgery was much more costly than anticipated. We are currently faced with over $1,000 in vet bills and this doesn't even include follow-up x-rays, spay surgery and vaccines. We are reaching out to the kindness of others to help us continue this little girl on her road to happiness. There are so many Boxers coming into rescue everyday; a sad case like this takes a piece of everyone's heart and a huge chunk out of the rescue funds. We at Boxer Rescue believe that every Boxer should have the chance to live a normal and happy life. Please consider sending a donation through Pay Pal or a check to the address below to help in covering the cost of Elly's special care. All donations go to meet the needs of the Boxers that come into rescue. Even a $5 or $10 donation can help. Thank you from Elly and all of the Boxers at Northeastern Boxer Rescue.
