5/23/02 UPDATE - She's got the Wiggle!!! As her name suggests she has been keeping the Faith and she is now a very happy dog. Faith has adjusted very well to her new foster home, and is currently living with 10 dogs and as many cats. She is so sweet and non-intimidating that no one seemed to really notice her arrival. She has never once chased any of the cats and on the first meeting she simply sniffed and walked away. She's so very calm and gentle that even when she met my 2 yr old grandson she just licked his fingers.

Faith is doing better everyday with strangers. She really loves people, and seems to trust women right away, but is a bit more cautious with men. After a couple of meetings she's just fine though. She loves my husband and when he comes home she greets him by bending in half wiggling as she is giving lots and lots of kisses.

Her fur is growing very quickly now and filling in more everyday. She has also gained about 5 lbs, which is a good start, but she's still very thin. She needs to put on more weight, but this shouldn't be a problem because she has such a good appetite.

As you know, Faith had a heart murmur when she came into rescue. It was a grade III out of VI. We were hoping it was caused by her poor condition and anemia and luckily this was the case. Last week it had gone down to a soft I.  We still scheduled an appointment with a cardiologist to be sure we didn't miss anything. She had her appointment on Tuesday and had a cardiac ultra-sound done. The results were wonderful!!! She does have a soft murmur but there is no obvious cause. There were no leaking valves found or any damage to her heart so, as she continues to heal and gain strength, it will probably disappear.

4/30/02 - We have good news on Faith. This Saturday the swelling in her legs started to go down, there's still some swelling in her front feet which will hopefully be gone soon. And on Sunday I couldn't believe what I was seeing. She was fuzzy, just like a little peach. That's right Faith has already started growing her fur back! She's amazing with only 1 week of treatment (and plenty of Love) she's already got a light fuzz over her body. She's going to be a REAL BEAUTY!

Faith is also really coming out of her shell. She spent Sunday morning in the reception area of the hospital and was so very happy to be with people. She's going up to other hospital staff on her own and becoming much less timid, especially if there's a treat involved. Oh, she's also a very quick learner. On Sunday she learned to sit in no time at all or maybe it has something to do with the treats. Well whatever the reason she was showing off what she learned on Monday, sitting for anyone that had something in their hand.

4/28/02 - Faith has had a setback and had to be hospitalized on Wednesday. What is happening is that her bloodwork showed that she is anemic and her protein level is very low. So by re-hydrating her body, it forces her protein to go even lower which has caused some severe swelling and leakage in her legs. Her hind legs have what is called pitting edema so when you squeeze her legs your fingerprints stay.

As a result, Faith has been put on a high protein diet and is getting scrambled eggs mixed into her food to try and raise her albumin level. She's being fed 4 times a day and getting many supplements to try and build her back up. Unfortunately Faith's stool is still very bloody which tells us that her intestines have been so badly damaged (scarring and inflammation) by the long term whipworm infestation that she's probably not even able to absorb the protein and nutrients that she so badly needs to recover.

Through all of this, Faith has been the sweetest dog.  I absolutely love her and those big brown eyes.

It's so upsetting that she is so terrified and hand shy.  When I offer her a treat, she cringes and backs away.   When I call her out of her hospital cage, she belly crawls- afraid I'm going to hurt her.  It's heart breaking. Just today, she's starting to trust me more and gave a few wags of her tail. Unfortunately I don't think she has ever heard the words "good girl" before, because she doesn't seem to react or understand when I keep telling her how good she is. Sadly, she is probably a victim of abuse as well as neglect.

I'm hoping that as she continues down the road to recovery and is shown love and kindness that I won't just be seeing little wiggles of her tail but the BOXER WIGGLES of happiness we all know so well.

4/22/02 - Faith was someone's pet, believe it or not.  She wasn't found roaming the streets.  She HAD a home, and these photos reflect the care she received in it.  This poor dog is a terrible victim of severe owner neglect.  She is covered with demodectic and sarcoptic mange, and as a result, she is completely bald over most of her body.  An infection has set into her legs.  The vet questions if she will ever regrow her hair.  She is infested with the worst case of whipworms that the vet has ever seen.  On top of that, she has a heart murmur.  Blood work was sent out to rule out other problems, including heartworm, so we may discover that she has even more health issues.

Look at that face.  As you might imagine, this young dog is as sweet as can be.  Her owners gave her away to someone who quickly gave her away again.  She was then given to a wonderful, kind woman who rescues all breeds of dogs.  This angel is fostering Faith and helping her regain her health so that we can find her the loving, caring, permanent home she so deserves.  Please help us to help faith.
