"
Gracie & Hadley"
This
dog has been adopted but has not yet completed the two week "trial
period" in it's new home. Should the placement prove to be a poor fit for dog
and/or family, he/she will be moved to the AVAILABLE section on the Available
Dogs page.
Grace and Hadley have been with us for 2 1/2 weeks. They are extremely sweet little girls that greet me with Boxer wiggles and kisses when I come home. They are very intelligent and respond very well to praise. They do the best kidney bean when you tell them they are good girls.
Gracie and Hadley are excellent with my 3 stepchildren, age 7,10 and 12. The kids love the dogs. The only complaint I have heard, was that Gracie was nibbling on the 12 year olds toes, while they were laying in bed together. Gracie is the more outgoing and inquisitive of the two. She tends to be more curious. She has a tendency to be a little headstrong.
Both girls would benefit from going to positive reinforcement type training class with their new family. When I walk both girls together, they tend to pull on their leashes. When we adopted Sunny two years ago, we went to introductory clicker training with him. It was a terrific bonding experience for all of us. Gracie and Hadley have been terrific with our dog sitter. The dog sitter wishes I could keep them! Gracie and Hadley are very bright girls. They know sit, stay, come, and no.
We have 3 dogs of our own, a Male Golden Retriever, a bossy female Boxer, and a male Boxer that we adopted from NBR two years ago. All five dogs get along just great! The only problem I have is keeping the noise level down when they are playing outside. They get going as early as 6:30 am and I have to bring them in when it gets too loud. The 4 Boxers really enjoy chasing and wrestling together, and spend hours playing together outside. The Golden Retriever does not know what to make of the situation and stays out of their way once they pick up speed.
Gracie and Hadley rely on each other a lot. They play together, take naps together, and do not like to be separated for long. They also like to curl up with our 3 dogs. Last night, my male Boxer snuggle up with Gracie on the couch and they fell asleep together. Occasionally, I will separate Gracie and Hadley, and pair each girl with one of my Boxers in the yard, so they can get used to playing with other dogs. They do not mind being crated at all, they go in with very little instruction.
They have only had one accident in the kitchen during their entire stay here. At bedtime, I had been crating them in a large wire crate in the kitchen for the first week. Sometimes, when I am hanging out in the kitchen with the dogs, they try to cuddle up with my Boxers while they are in their crates. Lately I have been leaving them loose in the kitchen at night, uncrated. This morning there were two little presents on the kitchen floor for me, so I am going to crate them at night again.
As I type this, I can hear them in the kitchen, squeaking some new toys that were just delivered from Foster and Smith. They absolutely love toys, but tend to rip the squeakers and stuffing out of almost every toy my dogs own. I have been giving them nylabone dinasours, kongs with cookies inside and booda velvets. These seem to keep them busy.
They are still thin, but have definitely gained weight while they have been in Foster care. We have been feeding them 3 times a day. I switched them back to puppy food, to help them gain weight.
Gracie and Hadley are wonderful dogs. Very outgoing, funny and affectionate. They love laying on top of my husband on the couch, or in bed. My wish for them, is that they are adopted by a family that loves them the way I love my dogs. My husband, (who is not a fan of being a 5 dog household), told me that "Hadley is getting very attached to her Daddy, and that he hopes they find a home before she gets to attached to him." I think the truth is that he is getting attached to her! Please consider adding Gracie and Hadley to your family. They will bring you a lot of joy and love.
Day One Report
Hadley is the more serious one, very sweet, and is the dominant of the
two. Gracie is goofy and is happy to have a bone or any interesting toy, one
that makes noise preferably. She took to a "silly slammer" toy
that talks and laughs when you throw it. She was throwing it up in the air
and running around while Hadley would rather sit by your side and let you
pet her. They are best friends and are content to play with one another.
They like to play tug of war and then curl up with each other for naps. Both
know sit and a little bit of stay. They respond to correction well. They
will jump up when excited, and listen when told "off", sometimes
then need a little help though. They don't like the crate very well, and put
on the brakes when being led to it. But I have been putting peanut butter on
a bone and that hopefully has been making it a more positive experience.
When in the crate last night, Gracie whined and cried a bit, but only for
about 5 minutes, then they were quiet the rest of the night. I went down at
about 7:30am and they were a little bit awake with nubbins wagging. But they
didn't cry this morning before I let them out of the crate to do their
business. There have been a few accidents, but they seem to know that they
should go outside. However, since they were used to being kept on a porch
for over 10 hours per day in their previous home they probably couldn't hold
it that long. I am confident that if they are taken outside on a regular
basis, the accidents will be much less frequent. After they are done with
their business outside, they walk toward the door to go back inside. I
think that they are afraid they will left outside. They have not been
destructive at all, and would rather chew on their bones. Their social
skills are being developed through interaction with my two other Boxers.
Day Two Report
I took some more photos yesterday and today. One of them is adorable -
Hadley with her arm around Gracie. I had to take it through the sliding
glass window as to not disturb the position. They do not like to do anything
without the other. If I take one outside without the other, the
other looks out the window, even with all the other dogs around her.
Everyone is doing better getting along, I'm slowly giving them more social
time. They all hung out during tv time last night. Gracie and Hadley slept
on top of each other, on top of my husband on the couch! Accidents
seem to be getting worse though. The sun porch seems to be just as
good as outside. I try to take them out every hour or so but they will
do nothing at times and then come back in and let it loose. But they haven't
had an accident in the house yet (knock on wood). This morning Henry
the Pug gave them a run for their money, the little biter let them have it
after too much tackling, he scooted underneath them continuously and they
couldn't catch him. They were very good, did not bite back or show any
signs of aggression beyond playing. They are learning a little better
not to play so rough, but still need to be watched carefully around him.
These two are going to need a home with people with the time to house train
them. If it weren't for the potty problem, they are content just to be
with each other and could keep each other company all day long.
p.s. They sit and lay down very well for puppies, they even seem to know
stay.
Please complete the Foster Home Application if you are interested in fostering these little charmers...or better yet, complete our Adoption Application if you have the time to devote to both of these darling girls.
