Follow Up: Gunther

We adopted Tango, now called Gunther, on February 12, 2002, one week after our precious Bupper died.  We thought it was a little soon but Gunther needed us and needed a home and actually we needed Gunther to help us with the horrible void we were feeling.

Anyway, the site said he was blind and was found deserted in an abandoned lot in Brooklyn.  We
couldn't understand who could do such a thing but then again all the horrid stories told on this web site prove how horrible people can be.  So...we decided to give it a try and adopt him.  We assumed that he probably was born blind and that is why we found it so hard to believe
that people would just dump him after having him for three years this way.  He isn't scarred or "bumped" up so it was obvious that someone had been taking care of him (a blind dog wouldn't live long in Brooklyn by himself).

He went to my vet yesterday and we found out some interesting things about him.  He was NOT born blind.  In fact, the poor thing used to be able to see (probably not too long ago either).  He has a disease called "Progressive Retinal Degeneration".  My vet thinks that the blindness could have taken weeks or even days to happen.  There is no cure, nor any preventive measure that could have been taken.

We feel awful that not only did this poor dog lose his sight but then his "family" dumped him as well.  This now made perfect sense to us-the people kept him while he could see and then dumped him when he developed a handicap.  How someone could do that to a dog that loves and trusts
you is beyond our comprehension.

He is a very gentle, loving dog that loves to play.  He can definitely be a bit mischievous and we have had some peepee "situations" but all in all he is a great dog and we know that all he needs is some time and patience.  He has already learned how to sit, stay and just recently "give paw"-we are very proud of that! He now has a huge fenced-in yard to play in (supervised, of course), plenty
of bones and toys to chew on and big, warm, fluffy bed to sleep on and a family that loves him no matter what. We just wanted to let everyone know that this dog did have a "Happy Ending".
