Liberty
This is Liberty’s Cinderella story...
Once upon a time there was a family who had two very special dog companions. The first was a 14 year old Cocker Spaniel, Mr Nubbs. Mr Nubbs was very old and had to leave for the Rainbow Bridge. His 8yo Boxer buddy, Jojo, became very upset the day after he had to leave and became very ill. The two dogs grew up together and Jojo missed her friend very much. Nothing her family did could console her.
Jojo was a very special Boxer. She was
very sensitive to her families needs.
Her
family brought her a companion last summer to try to make her feel
better.
His name is Justis and he is
a wild
Boxer boy. Jojo liked her new play pal, but was never quite the
same. Eleven months after Mr.
Nubbs left for the Rainbow Bridge, Jojo followed him there. This was very
hard on us, her family.
She had
gone every where with us
even on
vacations. She had left a very empty hole in our hearts.
Oh, don’t worry Justis kept us very
busy and very
distracted. He enjoyed
being an “only “ dog , but he missed another furry
body
to snuggle with-although he loves
his
humans (especially his kids) things were just not the same.
We
dreaded going through the puppy piddling stage again and wished for a
more mature dog that had
passed
through the potty training stage already-we had just completed that
with Justis.
We learned of the Boxer Rescue through the internet. We knew the Boxer
breed was for us. Josh, who
is my 13
yo son, and Brianna, my 11yo daughter, were anxious to rescue a Boxer. We
knew we wanted a female
between 1-3
yo. Those were are only
criteria.
So we began the process-application, phone interview, home visit
#1,
home visit #2. Nightly we began to
scan
the web page for a new Boxer buddy. Some were so far away and then we
saw Liberty. At that time her name
was Laverne and she was in a foster home with a very
gentle lady, Anita. She
was
only about 2 hours from our home. A
few phone calls to Anita and within 48 hours
we
were on our way to visit Laverne.
Justis
was with us of course. He was very anxious to interview his possible
new Boxer buddy.
......and so enters Libby into our hearts. Justis loved her at first sight. They played in the backyard like they had known one another forever. Justis is very outgoing and Libby is very timid. You see she had been picked up on the streets of N..J. as a stray. She had recently had a litter of pups. The pups were no where to be found. Libby needed surgery because some of her female organs had remained on the outside after her delivery. She was very underweight. She had a very bad ear mite infestation. Some where along the line she had been hit by a car. She was very timid, frightened and skittish. Some one had not treated her very well in the past.
By the time we saw her physically she was in very good shape-just a little under weight for the most part, but psychologically is another story. If she became upset she became a statue and wouldn’t move. Also when they spayed her they found that she had a blocked nasal passage. She had some difficulty breathing during the surgery and they had to do lazar surgery to open her nasal passage.
Now........this is where her fairy godmother helps her out! Ready........!!??
My children fell in love and we ended up
taking her home that night. She
was a
little hesitant to leave her foster Mom who had treated her so well, but in
the van she came to begin her
new
life. A new name was in
order-Laverne
just didn’t fit. Since we had Justis - Why not Liberty?
Liberty and Justis for all......
We have had Libby for about 4 months and our emptiness has been filled 10 times over. Slowly she is leaving her timid ness behind. She didn’t remember how to wag her tail when she came, but boy does she remember now. Her entire body wiggles. Kisses??!!.......she’s learned to give the sloppiest!! She loves to play with her Boxer buddy, Justis. She is just the sweetest ever!! Justis has taught her to get into mischief. She loves to chase the squirrels and run away with my daughter’s favorite stuffed animals. She loves to be with the kids. She even took a dip in the pool over the summer-supervised of course. She’s the first one in the van!! She loves to wake the kids up for school. She loves to snuggle with Justis on their chair-sometimes Justis sleeps with his paw on top of Libby almost as if he’s giving her a hug.
Honestly, she’s required a lot of patience. She’s had to learn to love and trust humans all over again. The rewards on our end have been tremendous. The past 2-3 weeks she has really begun to blossom. We’ve begun to see some of the Boxer goofiness that makes us laugh and laugh!!! I think she’s very happy here.....I know that we’re happy to have our little sweetheart.
.........and so the shoe fit and we hope that this Cinderella story makes you believe that there really are fairy godmothers out there.............
