Follow Up: Duke We we've had Duke in our home for almost a year now (February). We are excited to have our first Christmas with him soon, there are lots of toys and treats under the tree for him. Duke is doing great, he has put his weight back on (he is now 70 pounds or so) and his coat is beautiful. He loves to eat! We have him on the California Natural along with low-fat plain yogurt, boiled chicken and rice and scrambled eggs on the weekend. He loves his dog cookies too! We get all kinds from Three Dog Bakery, he particularly loves the carob dipped biscotti, though his favorite treat is the occasional vanilla soft serve cone from the ice cream shop up the street. Duke stays home during the day resting on the sofa, which he has pretty much taken over though he loves to stretch across Brian and me and watch TV. We leave the TV on for him during the day, he is going to be the smartest dog ever with all the Discovery Channel he has been watching. He is full of wiggles and the kidney bean dance when we get home in the afternoon and will always greet us at the door with a toy in his mouth, ready to play. Occasionally in his excitement he can't find a toy and will be ready with one of his many slobber rags. Either way, the evening always starts with a great game of keep away. Duke loves his toys, especially the stuffies with the squeakers. He adored the bunny that he got from my mother in law (she made him an Easter basket filled with toys and treats), though sadly, bunny only lasted until Duke was able to pull out all the stuffing and the squeaker. There are lots of trails behind our house and Duke loves to show off and run with us through them. He has gotten to know them so well! He is the only baby in our house though he gets the opportunity to play with other dogs including another Duke that lives next door and Sebastian, our friends' Chow. They spent a lot of time together this summer on beach and canoe trips. He is certainly the star at the dog park, everyone thinks he is so handsome, we of course already know that! He loves children, especially babies and gets to play with kids when our nieces and nephews visit. He is very affectionate though considerate of children and takes care not to knock the little ones over. I don't know how we ever lived without our 70 pound lap dog! |
