Follow Up: Mars and Luna

Dear Northeastern Boxer Rescue;

My sister and I wanted to write and update you on the first anniversary of our adoption.  This winter was difficult for me (Mars), as I had to have some surgery in January.  The doctor said I had medial luxating patella’s, which means my kneecaps were not in the right place and were causing me walking, and running problems, and some pain too.  So my mom took me to a specialist at New Haven Central Veterinary Hospital, (Dr. Pond) and he advised surgery on my left rear knew. I have enclosed some pictures mom took after surgery.  I was miserable the first few days after my operation and had to stay in a strange hospital.  I hurt a lot but they gave me lots of drugs to help me feel better, but they also made me dopey.  I missed my sister Luna, and my mom.  When I came home it was difficult because I had a cast on my leg and I did not feel well.  It took a long time for me to walk on my leg, but I am beginning to get the hang of it now.  Sometimes I hold my leg off the ground, and have found I can manage on 3 legs!  Mom doesn’t like that though, and makes me climb hills to have me work my hind legs.  I would prefer to lie on my back of the couch.  My sister was very good to me after surgery, and ever tried to help me get that awful cast off!

Now that it is spring, my sister Luna and I are outside more playing in the yard.  We have an electronic fence, buy mom still watches as we want to go out of our yard and explore.  We have some wild turkeys that come in our yard and we like to chase them!  One day we even saw some really BIG doggie friends in the yard and we wanted to play, but they ran away.  Mom said they were not dogs at all, but deer (?).  I do know what she means.  There also have been some bad dogs in our neighborhood too.  Mom always watches and warns us of the bad dogs.  She says their names are coyote.

Luna and I are very happy, but Luna always throws up when mom takes us in the car, so we have been going on a lot of short rides to get her used to the car.  We eat a special diet of venison and potatoes because we seem to be allergic to other foods.  I currently weigh 64 pounds, and Luna weighs 55 pounds.  I think we are done growing now as we had our first birthday in January.  Well off to the couch for me tonight.  Again I thank you for matching us up with our mom.  She thanks you too!  Special thanks to our aunts Pam Fosco and Laura Handy of Northeastern Boxer Rescue.  We will write again in the future!

 Mars and Luna Yoney

Hello from Connecticut! It is Mars and Luna to update you on our new home.

In April 2002 we moved to our new home and met our new family. It was a lot at first, a new house, a new yard, a new "pack" and CATS. Our home is on an acre and a quarter of which we can play on one acre. We have an underground fence so we are safe here. A nice man comes once a week to help us learn good behavior, although we are really well behaved anyhow (ask mom!) We have lots of toys-our favorites are the stuffed animals.

We have gone to the Doctor for regular check ups and our shots and we both got "fixed" too ;o) At least once a week we play with other canine friends like Jetta the Great Dane, Butterbean the Boxer, and Dusty a Pit Bull mix. Our mom's friend has made us lots of beds out of material and stuffing and we have them all over the house. We like to be in the kitchen with the rest of the family and spend lots of time there when we are not outside. We are NOT allowed outside alone but we do go out often with the family.

We are proud to say that we are housebroken (whew!) Sometimes we like to investigate the kitties but they do not want to play with us yet (their loss). We think they are coming around though.

We would like to thank Laura Handy and Pam Fosco for finding us a home with so much love in it. Thank you Northeastern Boxer Rescue for enabling us to find love and happiness.
