Follow Up: Remy (formerly Sunny)

In July, when our beloved Tasha died, we thought that the only suitable dog for our family was a German Shepherd, like her. We knew that we would always have a dog in our family and we quickly started to look for a new addition to break the deafening silence in our home. As we mourned our loss, we looked at many family photos and found that in virtually every photo that we had of our children, Tasha was close by with her ever watchful eye and nurturing affection. It was a horrible void. We continued to search for a new addition to our family. We made trips to our local shelter, three times a week, we contacted several breeders of several different breeds of dogs and we became discouraged. It seemed as though we were going to have to endure the silence for an unbearable length of time. Our shelter advised us that they very rarely had puppies or even young dogs without behavioral problems and that they are very cautious about adopting dogs to families with small children and other animals in the home…we have both. We even searched in three other states. Finally, we found NBR on the pet finder site. The day that I contacted NBR, Remy (formerly “Sunny”) was the only puppy from the litter of eleven that was still available.

Because of our past disappointments, we tried not to get the kids too excited. We knew that the rescue had, had hundreds of applications for the puppies. Two days later, we had our home study done and a day later we got a call that we had been selected to adopt “Sunny”. Needless to say, we were ecstatic. We called all of our friends and family, cancelled work for the rest of the week and brought Remy home two days later, on September 4, 2002. We didn’t even have to think of a name for her…we immediately started to call her “Remy” which is short for “Remedy” because she is, without a doubt, the key player in healing our heavy hearts.

She has filled the void in our family photos, and taken her post as another watchful set of eyes over our children…although it seems that she chooses to participate in the children’s mischief rather that prevent it J. She is a true joy to have as part of our family and what a character. I think that our friends, coworkers and family are already as bored with the stories of her antics as people get with hearing stories about a new baby. We are incredibly grateful to the NBR; Dawn Karam for allowing us to adopt Remy and for working so hard with all the dogs; Melanie Manning for coming to do our home study so quickly and for all the advise; and to Lisa Mastri for giving Remy (formerly Sunny) such a great start in life, while she was in rescue. Our family is whole again but not necessarily complete…there’s always room for one more J…I’m sure you’ll be hearing more from us soon…that is, of course, when our cats start talking to us again – for some reason they’re not as thrilled with our new addition as we are…cats, go figure J.

Peace and Blessings,

Marc, Susan, Juli, Eden and Remy

(Oedipuss and Clarice, too)
