All of us at NBR would like to welcome Barbara Pepin and her unit back
from Iraq. Please read Barbara's heartfelt "Thank You" below:
I want to take a moment and thank all
the NBR people and the visitors to the Website who took time out of their
busy schedules to show their support of my soldiers, my unit, and myself
during my deployment to Iraq. I received many packages, letters and
photos from fellow Dog and Especially Boxer Lovers.
All the letters, cards and packages
were greatly appreciated. I tried to write back to as many people as I
could. I know I was not able to write and personally thank everyone who
wrote. However every single one was cherished. We had a wall of pictures
that were sent to us, along with pictures of our own animal family members
back home.
My unit returned to the USA returning
to the 5 states we were formed from, Connecticut (which included soldiers
from Massachusetts), Maine, Puerto Rico, Alaska and Tennessee. One of my
happiest moments was when I walked through the door of my home to many
Boxer wiggles and kisses. After sixteen months of being separated my
babies remembered me in seconds and that was the most wonderful feeling in
the world. I was welcomed by them back to the family and I once more felt
complete. It made me think of how our four-legged friends must feel when
they are welcomed into a foster home and begin to receive the love they so
badly need and deserve. Especially how it must feel for them when they
are finally placed in their forever home.
I miss my military family that I grew
to love over the last year and a half, but I am grateful to be home with
my family members, both 2-legged and 4 legged. I can not wait to be back
helping NBR in any possible way.
Once more thank you to everyone who
took the time to share with us their thoughts and pictures.

Northeastern Boxer Rescue warmly remembers our rescue partner Lynne Melemenes on the anniversary of her passing. She worked tirelessly to save the lives of many animals, and her heartfelt goodness is sorely missed. We love and miss you Lynne. You were a good friend.

We at
NBR, believe that a Boxer is just about the perfect
friend. However, he or she will demand a lot from
you. They'll rely on you for nearly everything; food,
water, shelter, protection, training, exercise, grooming, veterinary
care, and of course love and companionship. While it is important to choose the right
Boxer for your needs, it is equally important to ensure that you
can meet theirs. You must prepare for their arrival, and
make them a well-mannered and welcome member of your
community.
The responsibilities of being a guardian of any dog are great,
but the love and friendship you'll receive in return is
priceless.

homework. Adoption is a lifetime commitment."
Gulliver
A Crushed Jaw Did Not Break Gulliver’s Spirit
A
State Trooper found a young boxer we named Gulliver cowering in the
bushes on the side of the highway after he was apparently hit by a
vehicle and left to die. The officer coaxed him out of his hiding
place where he had taken refuge. He scooped Gulliver up and gingerly
placed him in his cruiser; he immediately knew this poor frightened
boxer needed emergency medical attention.
The doctor at the
animal hospital examined Gulliver, stabilized him, and determined
that he would need to be treated by an orthopedic specialist to get
the best care. He had a severely broken jaw, several broken teeth,
multiple scrapes and bruises, and a pneumothorax (air in the chest
cavity). At this point NBR received the call asking if we could
help. We immediately made arrangements to take Gulliver to the
emergency facility at
TuftsSmallAnimalHospital.
When we arrived to
pick up Gulliver we did not know what to expect. We were
horrified to see his lower jaw dangling like a broken twig, but we
were amazed at his fortitude. The hospital staff could not say
enough about his courageous spirit; obviously he won their hearts.
If you can help with the medical care for
Gulliver

Oliver
A LIMITED PAST…AN UNLIMITED FUTURE
Multiple Surgeries Required
We received the following email regarding a young male
boxer who was born with a congenital deformity which affected both hind
legs. He was brought to an animal hospital to be killed by a pet store
owner when he could not sell him.
“I know you must get a lot of
emails like this one, but I am sending it to you anyway with the hope
that this story touches you like it touched me. Is this a puppy that
you can help (please, see attachment). This sweet puppy is at the
animal hospital where I take my pets.
I found your email address on the
internet. I understand that you have many animals and may not be able
to help him, but I thought I would send it to you just in case you may
be able to help him.”
NBRresponded immediately and offered our help.
We learned that Oliver has basically been caged his whole life. He
was born in a cage at a puppy mill, shipped to a cage in a pet store,
and survived in a cage in a vet hospital where he had been brought in to
be killed by the owner of a pet store. Oliver never had an opportunity
to walk on grass or feel earth underneath his deformed legs. Luckily
the animal hospital staff decided to seek help for Oliver instead of
letting him die.

Ladybugg
Rescued From Less Than Desirable Conditions
We picked up Ladybugg, a 9 year old
senior boxer from the home where she had lived the past 8 years of her
life......the last 2 weeks alone. Her elderly caretaker had
Alzheimer’s disease and was taken to a care facility. Out of town
family members provided food and water but left her locked inside to
fend for herself.
When we entered the home, Ladybugg was extremely scared, shy, and
confused. We knew immediately that Ladybugg’s neglect extended far
beyond two weeks. She was dirty, her coat was in poor condition, and
her nails were so overgrown and embedded into her paws that her pads
were bleeding. She had difficulty walking due to her swollen, infected
paws.
We immediately scheduled a vet appointment for the next morning to
evaluate her condition. The first concern were her infected paws which
they determined had a yeast infection. The nails were trimmed back
enough to allow her to walk with more comfort. She had a purulent
discharge that extended between the pads as well as her toes. Daily
soakings will need to continue and, if no improvement is shown within 10
days, she will need to return for reevaluation. They directed that all
of her activities must be limited….this is a very painful condition.
Ladybugg also had a complete exam which included extensive bloodwork,
fecal, and updated her rabies vaccine. The doctor discovered a very
small mass on the front of her chest which was not of immediate concern,
however we were told to monitor it’s size. She was sent home with
antibiotics, a soaking solution for her paws, and a gel for her crusty
nostrils. Ladybugg’s dental problems will need to be addressed in the
near future. She has severe tartar and gingival hyperplasia and an
infected upper molar which will most likely need surgery.
If you can help with the medical care for
Ladybugg

IN MEMORY OF COOPER
2005 - 2007
We are sad to report that Cooper has lost the battle with
his rare liver disease. Until very recently he was doing well and
enjoying life. However when Cooper started to fail he deteriorated
quickly and could not be saved.
Cooper brought a special joy to all who loved him. We
are eternally grateful to Carrie for making his short stay in this
world a happy one. Cooper was exceptionally endearing and will remain
in our hearts forever.

TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS
As they say, “time heals all wounds” and Jewel is no exception. She has
come a long way from the sad broken puppy in the initial photos, and has
completely healed from her surgeries. Jewel is thankful for all of the
heartfelt emails, donations and prayers throughout her recovery. Below
is a long awaited update written by her foster mom.
“I think back to not so long ago when I had to carry Jewel up and down
the stairs in the house and bring her food bowl to her on the couch
because she was unwilling to get up to eat. What an amazing spirit she
has.
The hardships that she has endured in life, the trauma of being hit by a
car, lying alone, broken and afraid for 2 days in a veterinary hospital,
and waiting for a familiar face to come and comfort her…which never
arrived. She had lost her home and her family just when she needed them
the most. Now, thankfully, those are all distant memories and the only
reminder is a small scar on the inside of her leg.
Jewel was recently spayed and has recovered quickly. The biggest
problem we encountered while she was recuperating was trying to convince
her that it was important to rest until her incision healed. When
presented with a warm lap to lay in she usually agreed.
I watch her now run full speed around the back yard, right on the tail
of her little boxer buddy. I know that as soon as she hears the crinkle
of the food bag, no matter where she is in the house, she will be at my
side before the first cup can be poured. T his little “Monkey” (which we
lovingly call her) is a typical boxer clown.
I am very thankful to have been a part of Jewel’s second chance. She
truly is an amazing dog!!!”

Winslow
training for the dog days of summer
"Just touching base. Winslow continues to get stronger everyday.
He's a
regular bull moose now. We are working on his walking and social
skills. He's great with people but has become a little over
anxious around
other pups. I bring him to the park every day now and we're trying
to get him
back into the social life. Overall, he is doing fantastic and is a
really
happy pup. We are still trying to get a picture of his nubby dance
but, he
twists back and forth so quick that it's hard. Here are two pics,
one snuggled
up with Pnut's blanket during that little cold snap and yesterday,
taking a
little siesta."
THE WINSLOW FAMILY
HAPPINESS FOR WINSLOW THE MIRACLE BOY
Winslow is on the final leg of his journey to a new life. He has
completed the last of his heartworm treatments and tolerated the
procedure well. The doctors feel Winslow is finally healthy enough to
be neutered and his appointment has been scheduled.
This fortunate dog has reaped the rewards from the kindness of
humanity. Our thanks go out to everyone who has followed Winslow's
story and contributed kind words, much needed prayers, and generously
assisted with his excessive medical expenses which have taken a toll
on our medical fund. I'm sure you will agree with us that he was
worth every penny.
The bonus to this happy ending is that Winslow’s wonderful foster
family have fallen in love with him. They have requested that he
become a permanent member of their family, and we are thrilled.
Welcome home Winslow!!!

Flown On The Wings Of Angels...Winslow Needs Your Prayers
Winslow is in critical
condition and he is in the intensive care unit at Tufts University
Animal Hospital. He definitely
needs your prayers. When we first received the call about Winslow we
understood that his leg was seriously fractured (apparently hit by a
car), he was abandoned by his family, and had not received medical
attention for two weeks. We immediately arranged to have Winslow flown
to Massachusetts where he could receive the best medical care
available. As soon as we saw him we were shocked by his condition and
could not help but cry. When we arrived at Tufts Animal Hospital it was
apparent that Winslow was in bad shape, however we were not prepared for
what the doctors discovered upon their examination.

The
Adoption Process
Boxers and Applicants
are not matched on a first come, first served basis. On average, it takes
between 1 week and 3 months to adopt a Rescue Boxer, depending
on your personal circumstances and flexibility.
For example; If you
are looking for a young female, who is good with other
dogs, cats, and small kids, please know that yours will be
a hard application to fill.
We get over 100 hundred
applications a week, and we place about 40 dogs per
month. Matching Boxers suitable for placement with younger
children, other dogs, cats, and special needs, yours and
theirs, increases the application review time and adoption time.
We hope you feel that
the right Boxer is worth waiting for.
