Sadly, what we found is that no treatment is available for Lexi's blindness. She was seen by an Ophthalmologist and diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). However, we are amazed at how adaptable Lexi is to her lack of sight. She appears to adjust to new surroundings within minutes, and within a day or so walks throughout the house without any guidance.
Lexi and Medina (Medina is the deaf girl also available for adoption) recently spent a week in a temporary foster home because of the foster families vacation. Below is a report after just 2 days in this new environment:
What a couple of characters these two are...Princess Lexi as she is known here has decided *ALL* toys are for her pleasure alone...she takes them and puts them in the yard and then plays with each one of them for a good 10 minutes or so before moving on to the next one, she ends up outside amusing herself for a good hour at a time. When she comes inside she finds a person, anyone will due she's not particular, and coaxes all of the love and attention she can out of them... These two have been awesome to have stay with me.
Report from foster home:
Lexi is very comfortable with her blindness. Even if you accidentally startle her, she just does the Boxer wiggle and is glad to know you are there. She is very trusting and loving. If she can’t find you, she will whimper until you let her know where you are by calling her. She follows sounds so well, you almost think she can see.
She loves sounds and has already sorted out all of the squeaky and bell toys for her personal use. She will search for you by your voice and feels her way around obstacles in the yard and in the house. Once she becomes familiar with an area, she will run around without a care in the world rarely bumping into anything.
Lexi walks well on a leash. She completely trusts that you will watch out for where she will walk and let her know when there are obstacles. She knows to adjust her footing when you tell her there is a step up or down. She is very careful around the other dogs as well as our cats and they all get along fine.
She is eating well and should get up to an appropriate weight in no time. Lexi is going to make some family very happy.
