  • PLEASE BE A VOICE FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK and sign the National Spay / Neuter No-Kill petition at:  http://www.petsandanimals.org

Pets & Animals in Distress' and project PAW (Pet & Animal World) is contacting shelters, organizations, animal lovers and volunteers in America to support, participate and network to be a voice for the animals in their State to help collect signatures to help pass a FREE Spay / Neuter program that can be utilized by all tax paying State residents for Free

The time has come to stop wasting our tax dollars to kill more animals and start spending our tax dollars to save, adopt and spay / neuter more animals every year instead having these innocent animals to be tragically killed and born into society that does not care.

We are looking to get this petition launched in your state, so that our signatures and voices will be heard and passed on to all public county and state officials including the Governors to help set a initiative to pass a FREE Spay / Neuter program.

This Free Spay / Neuter program has already been implemented at a south Florida Public County Kill Shelter that offers Free spay / neutering to all county residents, which you can read about in the Petition on how it was developed and is working.

A Free mandatory spay / neuter program is the only solution that can work to help reduce the pet overpopulation crisis in America.

Pets & Animals in Distress and project PAW thanks you in advance for your support on being a Voice for the many animals in your State that cannot speak that deserve a better and second chance in life than death!

ONE RESCUED BOXER

Bark If You Love Me
by Louise Bernikow
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/015601095X/northeasternb-20
A touching story about Libro, a brindle Boxer rescued from Riverside Park by a woman who never would have dreamed she'd become a dog lover. We've met Libro in our wanderings on the Upper West Side. What a sweetheart!

BOXER CARE AND BREED INFORMATION

The Boxer Handbook
(Barron's Pet Handbooks)
by Joan Hustace Walker
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764112449/northeasternb-20/
Excellent book on history, traits, care, health, behavior, and more. Includes an entire chapter on Boxer rescue and adoption!

Boxers For DummiesŪ
by Richard Beauchamp
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764552856/northeasternb-20/
Surprisingly excellent. This book skimps on the pretty pictures in favor of LOTS of practical advice, including very good medical sections (including instructions for preparing an emergency kit, and one of the surprisingly few books -given the frequency of Boxer skin issues-- talk about dermatological health), ten reasons to get a Boxer, training and (especially first-week) adjustment advice, and a small section on Boxer rescue.

Boxers:
Everything About Housing, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, and Health Care (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)
by Johanna Thiel, Chris Pinney, Renate Holzner
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764110519/northeasternb-20/
The language in this book is a bit stuffy, but it has extensive feeding and nutrition information, including a section on home-prepared meals. Tips on dog-proofing your home. Also a list of pet insurance websites. The author breeds Boxers, so naturally there is nothing in this book targeted to rescue owners. This book is published by Barrons, which has other good books on Boxers as well.

Dr. Ackerman's Book of the Boxer
by Lowell Ackerman
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0793825547/northeasternb-20/
Fairly basic dog care advice that happens to have Boxer pictures.

Guide to Owning a Boxer:
Puppy Care, Health, Feeding, Training, Showing, Breed Standard
by Patti Rutledge
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0793818613/northeasternb-20/
Good on history. Much more on showing than will be relevant to rescue owners, little on practical information.

A New Owner's Guide to Boxers
by Richard K Tomita
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/northeasternb-20/
More for people interested in showing, not much practical information. The breed history does include photos of some of the first Boxers --who were white or mostly white.

The Boxer
by Anna Katherine Nicholas
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0866220283/northeasternb-20/
Breed history around the world --lots on famous show Boxers. Not so relevant for rescue owners but interesting for breed history.

DOG RESCUE

Save That Dog: Everything You Need to Know About Adopting a Purebred Rescue Dog
by Liz Palika
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0876057377/northeasternb-20/
Unfortunately, this book does not include Boxers, but it is an excellent guide to the challenges and rewards of adopting a rescue dog. It includes moving stories of rescued dogs and their new owners.

Second Start: Creative Rehoming for Dogs
by Jacqueline F. O'Neil
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0876057296/northeasternb-20/
Training, testing a dog's temperament, preparing for a rescue dog's arrival.

TRAINING

Training Your Boxer (Training Your Dog Series)
by Joan Hustace Walker
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0764116347/northeasternb-20/
We own this one, and while lots of it is information that applies to any breed, there are special sections on Boxer history and characteristics, as well as on training deaf Boxers, agility and Schutzhund

How to Train Your Boxer
by Liz Palika
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0793836581/northeasternb-20/

The Monks of New Skete breed and train German Shepherds, but they do a great job of talking about training issues for any dog. They have two excellent books:
How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0316610003/northeasternb-20/

and

The Other End of the Leash
by Patricia B. McConnell
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345446798/northeasternb-20/
I haven't read this one yet, but everyone in the dog park raves about it.
