Adopted 8/16/02
6/17/02 - Here is Rhea, still homeless so many months later. She is coming around and loves other dogs but is not good with children. She loves her foster parents and needs a quiet home in the country. She is in NYC and would do better without all that action. She is a low maintenance dog and only wants to be loved. Please open your heart and home to this wonderful dog.
From the foster home, "(Rhea) is going to need a special home, I think. As she relaxes more, she gets sweeter and sweeter with me and my husband. She just follows us around, wagging her tail. She's especially glommed onto me. I love her to bits. But she still has a very hard time with strangers, and will growl at anybody, including children. (This is only in the house; outside, she just shrinks away but doesn't growl.) She seems to be most threatened by our daughter, who stops by quite often, but today we felt we saw some real progress for the first time. There was much less growling, and she let Nora slip her some cheese and even pet her a bit. We watch her like a hawk, though, because she did lunge for her once. Otherwise she's a perfect angel, and could just break your heart. She's very happy up in the country, where there's no scary noise outside. She's a great traveler in the car -- just curls up and goes to sleep. I sometimes wonder if she'd be less wary of strangers if she were in a house with other dogs; she seems to do fine with other dogs, and maybe the feelings of insecurity would be sort of diluted. For the time being, though, I think she needs to be in a house with no kids. We just put her in the bedroom when we have company. She doesn't seem to mind it; I think she's used to being by herself, poor baby. Generally, she really is blossoming slowly. Maybe we can get this growling thing under control."

1/1/02 - Rhea continues to improve by the minute. (My husband has decided to dub her Trixie, by the way. Doesn't matter much -- all you have to do is look at her and she's right at your side.) I think she is the sweetest dog on earth. She just wags and wags. She's perking up a lot now, as she recovers from her operations. She's done with her antibiotics. She gets all excited in the cold outside, jumps around and grins, and then is ready to go back in and get a liver treat. We got a message from the vet yesterday, with the biopsy report. The pathologist says two of her tumors were malignant, as the vet had thought, but they were very "low level," and she thinks he got them completely out. Yay! When she's not following you around, she just curls up on the loveseat and sleeps, snoring gently. All she needs is love, and it's so easy to give it to her.
12/18/01 - Rhea is a 7 year old, brindle female. She is always wagging her tail. She too came out of that house of horrors in NJ. She needs a home where she can curl up on the sofa or dog bed and enjoy the life she missed for so long. She loves to be outside, having never been there. She too is at our vet in NYC and he will do the works to her to get her back in shape. Please help her find a home for the holidays. She deserves it. To describe what she looks like now is unfair to her. She looks like she went to hell and back. Why the people are not being prosecuted is a slap in our face. To just be able to hand them over and get away with what they did to these animals is a crime. Please help make it up to Rhea.
