"Sam"

REMEMBER SAM? Please help him :( He needs you! We have put a lot of effort, time and money into Sam, knowing that some wonderful soul out there would take him in...is that wonderful person you? Sam is something very special and this is why we have gone to such great lengths to rescue him. Please show us that we did the right thing by saving Sam by offering him the life he deserves.

Here is the sequence of events over the past few weeks:

First, handsome Sam was found stray in NYC. He was brought into the NYC pound where we rescued him. He seemed to be very well cared for, very obedient and super lovable! I couldn't resist him.

Sam was very cozy and well loved in his foster home. While there, we had him treated with antibiotics for a urinary tract infection. The infection went away in no time. Sam was very happy, He likes all the dogs in the dog run, walks perfectly on a leash and is a perfect gentleman all the way around.

While coming home from a weekend trip to the country, Sam and his foster mom were passengers in a car that was in a car accident. Sam hit his head and began having a seizure. He was rushed the Animal Medical Center Emergency room in NYC to be treated. He was kept there for a few days, and once released prescribed an seizure combating drug, Phenobarbital. While on Phenobarbital, Sam was a bit "out of it". His foster mom became very concerned when Sam nearly collapsed and had another seizure.

Sam was then brought to the emergency hospital at the ASPCA where they ran more tests. The test results showed a rare condition known as "insulinoma". This condition is caused by a growth on his pancreas, which makes it hard for the body to stabilize blood sugar levels. This is the cause of the seizures. After many tests, and an ultrasound Sam's condition was stabilized and he was able to leave the hospital after 4 days.

Sam is now on medication (pills) that help to stabilize his blood sugar to normal levels. So far, so good. He also must be fed 4 small meals a day (instead of 2) to help maintain proper levels.

PLEASE confirm that we did the right thing by saving Sam and give Sam a place where he can live a comfortable and cozy life. He may be an older guy, but he is a truly wonderful dog that we believe deserves the chance to live his life royally. He is currently in a foster home where there is no one home all day, and 6 other dogs (half rescues too). This is not the ideal situation for Sam, for it is hard to give him the attention he deserves. We are looking for either a permanent or foster home where Sam can get plenty of love and personal attention. He promises to be an easy dog (I will vouge for him), very well behaved (besides the few accidents due to the medication he is on), and a loving, loyal companion.

11/1/00 - Sam is an 8 year old male cropped and docked handsome fellow. He was a stray that was brought into the shelter, so we do not know his story (if only they could could talk). He is a very sweet lovable guy that is quite mellow. He walks very well on a leash, knows "sit" and "paw". He seems to just go with the flow.

Sam has some blood in his urine, and feels the urgency to urinate when there is nothing left to come out. He went to the vet today , was given some antibiotics, but the lab results will not be back for a few days. One good piece of news is that the x-rays showed no stones or blockage...so now we must wait to see if the lab results show anything conclusive. It is possible that his condition is caused by stress, for he was in the shelter for a almost a week.

We will keep you posted on Sam's medical condition, until then think about how great it would be to have this easy going guy around your house and complete an online application!
